That thread is a great example of why you shouldn't default to displaying all posts in a thread :) Note that some of the posts in that thread are incredibly long. That was before I started asking people to post files on http://skydrive.live.com.
Most other forum software limits the # of posts per page. Typically, that's a user-configurable option. I think that could be really useful here.
The plus side - You don't have to wait for all of the posts to load, and it's easy to jump right to the end of the thread.
The minus side - If there's a post marked as an answer somewhere on page 3, people new to the thread will post requests for help on page 5 and never see the answer.
So it seems like a good compromise would be to have pages for threads longer than 40 posts, and any posts that are marked as an answer should appear right under the first post in the thread. What do other folks think about this idea?
There was a previous post in the support forums requesting an easier way to link directly to a specific message in a thread. I hope you'll consider adding that functionality as well. Here's the workaround I'm currently using:
1) Find the post I want to reference
2) Float mouse over the "reply" button for that post
3) Right click, select "copy shortcut"
4) Paste the shortcut into the menu bar (example: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/3aae3b66-6a1a-47e8-ad1b-b20b68eaecf8/79ea3219-d76e-40bc-b910-c7d347002e66/reply)
5) Remove the "/reply" from the end of the link
6) Go back to the previous "/" and replace that with a "#" (example: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/3aae3b66-6a1a-47e8-ad1b-b20b68eaecf8#79ea3219-d76e-40bc-b910-c7d347002e66)

Yes for sure. And it occurred:why have the contract/compact button at the top of a thread when the thread and posts are viewed with most recent at the bottom?Wouldn't it be more helpful to have compact in each reply?Friday, November 13, 2009 5:28 PM

...there was a previous post in the support forums requesting an easier way to link directly to a specific message in a thread.
That thread died without response. and I cant find it anywhere. :|
Also,
since we already have a system to place marked answers just below the question, I think new readers will get them instantly without browsing whole thread..
Hope they add this functionality as soon as possible...
Thanks

Are your talking about this thread started by me How to add a link to a specific post in a thread? It still exists but can't be found by the forum's search engine. I just have discovered it again using "My Threads".

It might be a temporary problem, but today I won't be able to find some of my forum posts even if using the exact thread title to search for.
Anyway - thanks to Mark for describing his workaround.
