Disk size smaller After Restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • anyone know why windows is reporting that i only have a 250GB drive when Disk manager reports (correctly) that i have a 1TB drive? I think this started after i restored the machine from a backup.

  • Hi Peter,
could be a bug (although I have not seen such an issue before).
Was the original volume, from which the backup has been created, 250 GByte in size? Did you clone it with other tools at any time before?

If you have a Vista DVD (diskpart in the XP recovery environment has a limited functionality), you could try following procedure:
Open command prompt in computer repair options.
    Type following commands:
    list volume
    select volume C
(verify on the screen before, that the system partition is mounted as C:).
shrink (this will reduce the size of the volume to the lowest amount possible given by the file allocation)
extend (without parameters this will attach all directly following free space on the disk to the selected volume and should also fix any wrong entries in the volume description)
    (and reboot)
    Best greetings from Germany
