I don't have an antivirus installed , I see this problem after formatting hard drive & reinstalling vista. After that I tried installing all the updates and it made matters worse since I can't login anymore due to invalid license. Should I try installing SP2 directly ?Friday, January 24, 2014 12:07 PM

You need to install SP1 first - then SP2.
Your machine almost certainly came with an AV pre-installed from the factory (and probably also included in the Recovery media) - you need to uninstall that and run its cleanup utility afterwards before doing anything else.
