  • I lost recovery disc, Sony no longer carries recovery disc for me to order, hard drive too corrupted to recovery from partition. I have an OEM Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Disc
that I purchased to install on Desktop. Can i use that disc with the Sony CD-key provided on the COA legally?

  • Hello Kableeth,

If you have a genuine Microsoft systembuilder/OEM CD for XP Home, and the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) on your Sony is for XP Home, Setup on that CD will accept the Product Key (PK) on your CoA to complete Setup.  It is important to ONLY use the PK on the CoA on your Sony and to NOT use the PK that came with the systembuilder/OEM CD.

Once setup is complete, restart the computer but DO NOT allow Windows to do an automated online activation, because it will fail.  Instead follow the instructions in this KB to do a Telephonic Activation:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890
