installing home server version 2 (Vail)

Question

Hello i have an acer easystore h340 WHS system, is there anyway to upgrade it to the new version for beta testing without loosing all my existing media. i have all 4 drive bays filled with 2tb wd green drives. Also am looking at installing on a new custom built system do you think a core i3 550 will work fine for real time video streaming and trans-coding to my ps3 for viewing on my 1080p 47" display. the current atom proc in my acer is not near powerful enough for any trans-coding especially real time.

Upgrading any existing server will require moving everything off the server and flattening it. In the case of an OEM server you should wait to see if the manufacturer provides an upgrade path for your hardware.
Best would be to build a new server for running Vail. I would suggest a low-end i5 processor; it should have enough processing power to do real-time HD transcoding.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Marked as answer by Jonas Svensson -FST- Friday, October 29, 2010 3:55 PM

Thanks a bunch for the reply i have done just that and built a new server just for Vail. Everything is working extremley well except for the one issue i built my system based on a Gigabyte H55N-USB3 mini atx motherboard and installed all the chipset/lan/usb/sound drivers as Vail didn't have native support. The issue is with the onbaord vide drivers Intel graphics accelerator and the core i3 550 which has build in graphics support and is required to use th onboard video on this board. Everytime i install the video drivers it ends up corrupting my display and causing the sytem to continually reboot. Un-installing the drivers and using the standard VGA drivers allows the system to run stable except i have no support for video grater than 1024X768 which stinks on my 22" display also of coaurse no direct x or anything of the like. I have searched jigh and low for windows server 2008 drivers for this video and nothing seems to be out there. The latest video drivers for win 7 x64 vista 64 from gigabyte are casuing this issue and also the version on the driver cd is also causing the same problem. Any idea please

On a side note my server to server data transfer rate from the acer to my custom built running the H55 with 1 1tb wd black as main drive and 3wb 2 tb greens with 4 gigs 1333 ddr3 modulels 2x2gb and the core i3 550 is arond 50MB/sec over gigabit through a dlink dir 655 and a 8port 10/100/1000 unmanaged 8 port router

I'm running Vail on the very similar GA-H57M-USB3, Core i3-530, 4GB DDR3 1600 without any issues - though I connect over remote desktop most of the time rather than using a local display. I'm running Intel(R) HD Graphics driver version 8.15.10.2103, 3/31/2010, mb_driver_vga_intel_vista_w7_64.exe.
You might want to run memtest86 to check your memory. On other machines I've seen garbled display due to memory problems and integrated graphics, which uses the higher memory addresses. Also avoid overclocking.Sunday, November 14, 2010 10:53 PM
