Can't get past login screen to activate windows XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • I deleted SP2 so I could do a new install of XP, but after rebooting it took me to the login screen asking me to activate windows. I clicked Yes that I want to activate Windows, but all it did was start to load windows then immediately brought me back to the login screen, again asking if I want to activate Windows. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Try the following:

    1. Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode".

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us

    2. Go to Start > Run and type: %systemroot%\system32  then press the Enter key.

    3. Locate these two files: wpa.dbl and wpa.bak

    4. Rename the wpa.dbl file to wpaold.dbl and wpa.bak to wpaold.bak

    5. Reboot your computer into Normal Mode. This will force activation on the following boot. Sometimes if those files get corrupted, they can cause this type of problem.

If the above procedure does not solve the problem, then try:

Guided Help to remove the script that interferes with Windows activation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us

  • I'm unable to do either of those. When I try logging into safe mode it says something like "windows cant be activated in safe mode, please reboot into normal mode". I can't use the Guided Help because it requires me to be able to login to Windows.

  • I cant do either of those, when I go into Safe Mode it tells me something like "Windows cannot be activated in Safe Mode, please reboot into Normal Mode to activate Windows." I cant use the Guided Help either because it requires me to be able to login to Windows using the Administrator account, but the Administrator account continuously prompts me to activate Windows just like the normal account.

  • Randir14,

There is no known requirement to uninstall SP2 in order to do a clean installation of XP.

Why not just do a clean installation right now?  Here's a good tutorial:  http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
