My daughter has an acer notebook which we recently tried to re install windows xp (due to virus and port blockage) but we have a problem with the validation of the product key.It will not accept the one that came with the machine , i do have another copy of XP but it is not media version. Will my product key from a different version affect the installation?

  • Hello ConfusedNikki,

If you are using the recovery media that came with that computer then there should be no reason that the product key is not working. I would highly suggest contacting Acer for further assistance with this issue.

  • To answer your last question, yes your product key from a different version will affect the installation.  I assume you are
using the product key located on the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) on the bottom of the laptop.  You must use the
version of XP indicated on the COA.  For instance, if the COA says "XP Home OEM" you need an OEM version of XP Home to reinstall.

What do you mean "it is not a media version"?  Do you mean XP Professional Media Center?

Also, were did you get the CD media you are using for reinstallation?  Did it come with the laptop?

Finally, is the product key being rejected right away during install, or during activation?

  • The product key affixed to the Acer computer will only be valid with Acer's Windows recovery media.
