Is there any way to use Live one care on WHS?? I would rather use it than the stupid McAfee that wants to download and install on my server. I already have a valid copy of Live One Care why would I want to buy from McAfee anyway?? Thanks for any help.

  • OneCare will not install on Windows Home Server at this time.

I assume that you are running one of the HP MediaSmart Home Servers, since the Mcafee software is being offered with the new update. It is optional and is not needed.

I'm running 2 Home servers and neither has a virus scanner on it. Files put on the server come from my PCs, which are protected. The Firewall on the server is on to prevent hacking. I see no need to burden Windows Home Server with active protection of any form, though others may disagree.

I always felt the same way. I figure if the file comes from your desktop via the desktop virus scanner, what is the point in running active protection and burdening the server? But since it popped up on my server I thought it was possible that it was a requirement. Yes I am running an HP MediaSmart Home Server.

  • The McAfee software (or any other protection) is completely optional.

One day we may see a version of OneCare that runs on Windows Home Server, but nothing has been announced, so that's just speculation. If OneCare on WHS were the Hub for all of the Home PCs, helping to protect all PCs connected to it and providing the management interface for the client, I think it would be a valuable add-on - optional, of course.

Is there any way to be put on a mailing list if one care becomes availible for WHS? I really like the interface one care gives and the "tune-up" button is great!!

  • I'm quite sure that there would be a fairly big announcement if this ever happens. I'm not aware of any notifications that would be available to "subscribe" to.

I agree that the simple interface for OneCare is one of its strong points.

  • The protected by client virus scanners theory breaks down when the kids plug in their laptops. Lord knows where they have been. I have been bitten by this more than once, and don't like to say "No, you cann't use the network" because then they lose the abillity to use their desktops with their laptops. Virus scanners from multiple sources do pick up things missed by a single source scanners, but I think a centralized DB and ease of use would far outweigh this for the "average" user. Also, I would be able to control the granting of exceptions network wide rather than on a machine by machine basis.

Question; why is WHS not compatable with OneCare, It seems to work on Server 2003?

  • It works on 64 bit server only.

And, you are correct, all bets are off when the kids plug in the laptops - however, the server is still not going to be infected unless you've dropped the security on WHS. While they may upload infected files, the client scanners should catch the infection when downloaded to another PC.
