Still here Mr. Darin Smith but where are you? RRS feed

  • Question

  • This has been an intermittent problem last few months of ownership purchased through boutique desktop builder. Have no validation issues when going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ website (i.e. "Validation Complete!").

    Problem:
Background changing to black/Build 6001 copy of windows is not genuine(lower right corner of desktop) - Vista 64 (OEM)

Here is the report via the Genuine Diagnostic Tool you requested. Had an error code but the print screen failed!? Will need to write it down next time.

  • Hello Ramundo,

I see nothing wrong in your Diagnostic Report. It shows Vista as Genuine and I don't see any other error codes.

My suggestion is to Generate a Diagnostic Report while you are experiencing the issue.

I also recommend that you create a new thread, this thread was marked as Answered because there was no response to my request for in a Diagnostic Report in over 5 days.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hello Ramundo,

Would you describe, in more detail, the nature of the problems you are experiencing?

Do you receive any other error messages?  If so, please provide the full message.
Does any of Vista's funtions act strangly? (example: Control Panel window not opening)

Lastly, please download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue" click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.

Be sure to run the Genuine Diagnostic Tool when the problem is occuring. Otherwise the report will not show the symtoms of the issue.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • My apologies Mr. Smith, the forum for newbies can be daunting.

    1. "My suggestion is to Generate a Diagnostic Report while you are experiencing the issue."

2."this thread was marked as Answered because there was no response to my request for in a Diagnostic Report in over 5 days."

Your admonishments not withstanding, I did as you requested. The reason for both 1 and 2 above, are I did generate a report immediately after the black screen/6001 copy is not genuine. Furthermore, 5 days was the time span when this anomaly occured. I did say intermittent. I can start a new thread if you sincerely believe this enigma is worthy of further investigation. The Diagnostic Report confirmed what I already knew. Your effort has been appreciated!

    Thank you for your time,
    Ramundo

  • Hello Ramundo,

There was no admonishment intended, I was only attempting to explain a) why I couldn't see any errors in your Diagnostic Report and that by generating the report while the issue was occuring, should show what's going wrong and b) Why I had not returned to this thread after 5 days had elapsed (I don't usually check thread once they are marked as answered).

My apologies if it appeared that my post was intended to scold you.  That was not it's purpose.

As for your Vista's intermittent problem, it seems from your responce that you did, in fact, run the Diagnostic Report right after getting the 'Black Background and the ''6001 copy is not genuine" message'.  My assumption is that the 'Black Background and the ''6001 copy is not genuine"' message occured right after Vista loaded (i.e. after starting or rebooting the computer).
If so, then I have seen this issue a few times before. It is a rare issue where, we believe, an error occures, during Start-up, that causes Vista to, monetary, goes from a Genuine state to a Non-Genuine state and back to a Genuine state again (possibly taking only a sec or so).

If Vista goes into a Non-Genuine state, even for a sec, the 'Black Background and the ''6001 copy is not genuine" message would be triggered. Unfortunatly, Vista can take up to two reboots to fully recover from a Non-Genuine state, so even though Vista was Non-Genuine for only a sec, the 'Black Background and the ''6001 copy is not genuine"' message would remain untill the next (or secound) reboot. This would also explain why the Diagnostic Report showed Vista as Genuine.

Since this error doesn't leave any traces (at least none that the Diagnostic Report can detect) after it occures and since we believe it only happens for a split sec., it is extreemly hard to troubleshoot. In addition. we have, so far,  been unable to reproduce this issue on any of our test computers.

We believe the issue may be related to a bad Driver (or possibly a program) that is just slightly incompatible, with Vista, enough to randomly error out at startup. (if it's a program, it would need to be one that launches at windows startup)

The only advice I can provide is to think back to when this problem first occured and try to remember if you installed any new hardware (where you needed to install a driver) or a new software program, around the same time. If you can think of anything, go online and see if there is any Updated versions of that driver (or that program) available.

I am very sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS

  • Mr. Smith,

"I am very sorry I couldn't be more help" - Correction, sir! You have been immensely helpful. I too theorize that a hardware/software driver could very well be the problem. When I initially began using this desktop, I had exhausting video/monitor/stability issues. Although I have resolved the most troublesome, this Non-Genuine problem appeared after I had finally achieved a stable system. Although I have been cautious to only use programs which are digitally signed and approved compatible with Microsoft Vista (via the Windows Vista Compatibility Center), the complex and myriad interactions between hardware and software is not an exact science. There are no guarentees. From my three or four month web investigation into this issue and my previous video problems, I learned that there has been and will likely continue to be Genuine Validation issues. This desktop is a dual boot (XP Pro and Vista Ultimate) with a Raid 0, two hard drives configuration. For me, both operating systems have their strengths/weaknesses. The complexity of a Raid 0/dual boot system could likely be part of the problem - who can truly say. Before I end our productive interaction, I wanted to thank you again for your help. In my humble opinion, reading the other forum users myopic and absolutist attititude of - YOU WORK FOR MICROSOFT AND YOUR SUPPOSE TO FIX IT would likely exhaust what limited tolerance I have for this silly human race.

    Take Care,
    Ramundo

  • Hi Ramundo,

Your last sentence actually made me laugh out loud.  I thank you for your understanding and hope that the issue doesn't cause you too much inconvenience.

    Be well Ramundo,
    Darin
