Iv given that a go, it was already on Automatic but i re-selected it and clicked apply anyway. I even tried restarting the Software Licensing Service but still no luck when typing in the product key. It still says 'the product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows Vista product key, please check your product key and type it again'. Iv tried the key from my other broken Vista laptop too but still doesnt work :(

I have also tried entering the key using slui.exe 3 and 4 but that doesnt work either!

    Here is my report now:

    Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0):

    Windows License Type: OEM SLP
    Windows OS version: 6.0.6002.2.00010300.2.0.003

OK - that' cured the Software Licensing service problem .....
and we're back with the original one :(
The Key from your Broken laptop wouldn't work anyhow (it may be accepted by the computer, but it would almost certainly not activate).

Please go to the Validation site, and attempt validation - www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate
If/when it fails, go to the Diagnostics  - www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag - and see what it reports. Follow any advice on fixing problems, and then  try validating again when you have all green ticks

    post back with your results.
The only other thing I can think of doing is CHKDSK and SFC scans to see if there are physical or OS problems....

try a CHKDSK, followed by an SFC, as follows.

    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK   C:   /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search  box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
     - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

    Which 'command prompt fix'??
    this one?

Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

     Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

If so, and it completed  without an error both times, then you were doing something wrong!

Please try again - if you get an error this time make a note of the EXACT error message and post back.

  • Hello thank you for your reply, yes that is what iv tried, i am 100% sure that iv followed the instructions exactly. The only error message i get is after typing in my product key from the sticker underneath my laptop 'The product key you have entered appears to be invalid'. (after rebooting twice)

I have just tried the above again for luck! This is the third time and it still doesn't work :( I do get the message 'A duplicate file name exists or the file
cannot be found' when typing in rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

Hello thank you for your reply, yes that is what iv tried, i am 100% sure that iv followed the instructions exactly.

    Here is my new report:

Something has changed - because the errors in MGADiag have changed significantly!
Please check that the Software Licensing service is set to startup type Automatic.

    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt that comes up
In the listing of Services, find the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
right-click on it, and select Properties.
make sure that the service Startup type is set to Automatic - click Apply if you've had to change anything.

    Then try starting the service.
    What is the result?

If you get an error message, please report back with the EXACT details.

If it succeeds, reboot - run an new MGADiag report, and post it back here

  • Iv given that a go, it was already on Automatic but i re-selected it and clicked apply anyway.
