PC not able to update...

Question
-
Hi all! Hope I'm in the right spot to ask this... got a weird question that has me concerned in regards to my computer. Have a Compaq Presario (Intel Celeron CPU 1300MHz, running XP Home Edition v. 2002 Serv. Pack 2)... for a while now when the CPU tries to due it's daily Windows update, it fails to due any installing. My list is up to 88 updates that currently need to be done... I've also noticed the CPU's clock is starting to change unexpectedly (always goes back exactly one hour once or twice a week upon boot). The clock part I can live with, need to get these updates in though... we are a small business that uses UPS Worldship on it and would hate for anything bad to happen to the software used on that machine (UPS updates are fine). Any advice would be appreciated... thanks much!

Hi JamiePrincipe,
Sadly, you're posting to the wrong newsgroup. However, you may want to try the Windows XP Expert Zone Community, found at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/default.mspx. That may be the best place to turn to solve your issue.
For what it's worth, you may have a corporate policy that does not allow Windows Update to install. If that's the case, please contact your Systems Administrator. Otherwise, the issue may be due to not having a copy of Windows XP that has been activated and registered in Windows Genuine Advantage. Other thoughts could be an old/out-of-date web browser, not installing the Windows Update Installer Tool (if there's a grey bar at the top of your browser after you try to install, right-click and install the necessary tool), or something else. I can only speculate.
As for your clock issue, this may be due to a dying CMOS battery. For that, you may need to contact HP/Compaq support.

This was moved out of the HPC forum.
You can ask this question at www.answers.microsoft.com.
Or I can move it into a specific MSDN/TechNet forum if you'd like.
Thanks!
