"may be a victim of software counterfeiting" (and webcam not working)

Question
-
Recently recieved "may be a victim of software counterfeiting" error messages. I suspect this may be due to virus/spyware as I am currently out of the US, but don't really know. Simultaneously, my webcam has stopped working, which I'm guessing is related. I tried the recommendation prompts, which directed me to website directions to re-enter my product key, but it was rejected. I've had the computer 1 year with no problems. It was from a retail chain, so I highly doubt there is actually anything counterfeit going on
Help please!

Still the same.
Obviously there's something not happening that should be - I think your best option is to get a techie to look at your PC, and point him at this thread, and see if he can see what's happening.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

The system appears to have lost its product Key.
Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Hi Noel,
Firstly, thanks for your help so far.
I ran both the CHKDSK and SFC scan. During the SFC scan, I received the following text:
"Verification 60% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
I've uploaded the CBS.log as instructed.
The new MGADiag Report follows:

In this case, we may be lucky....
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)
Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 minsto a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

This may be a silly question, but where would the program be likely to install itself? I downloaded and installed it, but can't find it anywhere on my system. There is no option for me to choose where to save the program or to open the containing file folder.
Also, I've discovered that my system will also no longer detect SD cards. I'm guessing this is related...
Tuesday, October 29, 2013 10:56 AM -
It doesn't actually install anything - it merely correct errors in other installs (of Windows Updates).
We'll worry about the SD card detection problems later. - I suspect that the problem lies with the USB drivers (possibly a recent update for them)
Just post the CheckSUR.log file that I mentioned in my last post, and that'll tell me how much work it had to do :)

I'll post a fix protocol for them later.

I've uploaded a file - nahaa.zip- to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\nahaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\nahaa
or
DIR E:\nahaaThe drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...
XCOPY <drive>:\nahaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h
(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )
run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows. Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, andpost a new linkAlso run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

I'm unable to locate the nahaa files using the Command Prompt following the above instructions. Any recommendation?Monday, November 11, 2013 12:46 PM

In that case you probably didn't follow the instructions for extracting then properly - or are you saying that you were unable to get into the Repair Environment?
In a Command Prompt window (in normal Windows) run the following command:
DIR C:\nahaa /S
post the results (it will take a couple of minutes to finish)
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I moved the nahaa files to the desktop and that seemed to help. Here is the link for the CBS log.https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A6FCD8C99B141FFB!109&authkey=!AIwT5AUrLzl_UfU

Good, those files are where they should be, then.
Please follow these instructions, and not what happens at each stage
Reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\nahaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\nahaa
or
DIR E:\nahaaThe drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command... (Which drive letter are you using?)
XCOPY <drive>:\nahaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h
(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )
run the command (it should take almost no time) (NOTE WHAT HAPPENS _ is there any error message, or other response from the machine?) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows. Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, andpost a new linkAlso run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

There were no problems in the command prompt. It said 17 files had been copied.
Here is the MGADiag. SCFScan here: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A6FCD8C99B141FFB!110&authkey=!AJYgV9MZMuPDzqo.

The files still haven't changed
What drive letter actually worked on the test? You MUST do the test in the Repair Environment, and not just use 'C:' because that's your usual windows drive - it almost certainly won't be the correct drive in the RE.
What drive letter did you use in the command?

I used Drive D in the Repair environment at start up. When I used C, I received 'File Not Found', so I tried the next. D didn't say this, so I continued with D.

OK - let's try it a different way, then.
In normal Windows, run the following command in an Elevated Command Prompt.
XCOPY C:\nahaa C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs /y /i /s /v /h
Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)
Post the new CheckSUR.log file

Still the same.
Obviously there's something not happening that should be - I think your best option is to get a techie to look at your PC, and point him at this thread, and see if he can see what's happening.
