Windows Vista Home Premium Product key you typed is invalid for activation

    Question

  •

Hello, i bought an inspiron 1520 from Dell, i am aware that i should have gone to them for support, and i have, they are of no help.

I have not installed any hardware or changed any of the drivers

I bought my computer back in august and it came with an OEM version of windows vista home premium and was both activated and validated. On monday i restarted only to find that the next time i logged in, my product key was supposably invalid. From the information i have gathered from this forum already, i believe it is the slui 3 dialog, it has three options, 1) run with reduced functionality, enter a different product key, and contact Dell. I have tried using the command prompt as admin to try to run slui 4 to try to do it by phone, but every time i tried it would only refocus on the existing dialog. I tried reentering my product key but was greeted by another window that told me that that key was invalid, and gave me a [0xc004F050] error. i have tried running the cscripts located on http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2350062&SiteID=25, it had no effect. To clarify, i do not have access to my start bar.

I have also tried to do system restores and Dell factory image restore, but the dell factory image does not exist, and most of the system restores i have tried have errors in them. Either way, the problem was not solved through this method

I do not have a reinstallation dvd for windows but am getting one mailed. I do however have acess to the part numbers.

I really need to get my computer back up and running as soon as possible, as it is very close to finals week,

    Thanks for any support,

    khex

  • Hi Khex,

The alternate steps to get you to the Change Product Key window is to:

    1) Click the option 'Run with reduced functionality'

    2) A internet Browser should come up, type: %windir%\system32\cmd.exe in the browser address bar

    3) A window with a black background will come up

    4) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    5) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    6) Click the Next button.

    7) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    8) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 9)

    9) Return to the window with the black background

    10) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    11) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    12) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Atomated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

Once completed, you may need to reboot twice.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Darin,

    thanks,

    Khex

  • Did you do the 9 steps before the slui.exe 4 step?

  • yes, if in the black backgrounded box you mean the command prompt. When i enter slui.exe 4 into it (i have also tried slui 4) it only brings the the other windows activation window back to the front.

I also cant close that window, because then it logs me off.

is there anyway using the slmgr.vba to bypass it? I have tried using the -rearm command, but it gives me an error [error: slmgr.vba (300, 9) 0xc004e017 (null). with null being the source value.

I have tried deactivating my internet and restarting in hopes that slui 4 would come up on its own, but that has not worked either.

  • Hi Khex,

Are you following my steps exactly? If you are, then what happens when you do step 4 (i.e  "type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key")? Does the "Change your Product Key for Activation" window come up? If so, what happens when you type in the product key< from the sticker on your computer, and click the Next button?

  • Hi Darin,

I have followed your steps exactly, when i get to step 4 and type in slui.exe 3, it brings the activation window that the computer started with back to the front i.e "Your windows vista home premium activation key that you typed is invalid for activation"your Product Key for Activation" window up, likewise, when i enter slui.exe 4, it does not bring up activate by phone options. It does NOT bring the "Change  When i press next i get an activation error that reads "the Following failure occured while trying to use the product key: [0xC004F050] Description: The software liscencing service has reported that the product key is invalid"

  • I had the same problems, and the only solution that worked was listed here:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2897592&SiteID=25

It was step set 3 that did it.  The first 2 were no-gos.  Good luck!
