WHS on existing domain (Workgroup question) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using WHS on an SBS 2003 domain just to act as a backup solution for the workstations and want to use some of the shares to offload extraneous files from my SBS 2003. (Stuff I want to 'archive' to offload from my SBS 2003 but don't necessarily want to delete it).

My question is my domain is xyz.local.  The workgroup on the WHS is 'workgroup'.  I would like for the WHS to show up in the network computers.  Can I name the workgroup 'xyz' WITHOUT JOINING THE DOMAIN???

AGAIN....I am NOT wanting to join the WHS to a domain (I know this is bad).  I just want it to show up in the network browser.

In doing so my hope is it will show up in the network computers.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Renaming the workgroup won't work as well as you hope. but there's nothing to prevent users from connecting to the shares anyway. You could, for example, create a shortcut on everyone's desktop to your server's shares, similar to the one that's created when you install the connector.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
