Peer to Peer syncing stopped but news updated? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have read everything in the forums, but once again, I'm not finding the same situation as mine.  I set up mesh for p2p syncing of My Documents between my laptop and netbook.  This worked just peachy for several months (I've been using Live Mesh for 9 months now).  I ran into some issues last December and this forum was very helpful to get back on track.  Ever since then, I religiously check my News on both the laptop and netbook to ensure everything is still peachy and News is reflecting changes from both machines.

I noticed a few days ago that I had quite a few Live Mesh placeholder files on the netbook and became concerned. (I do most of my edits at work on the laptop and not really that many at home on the netbook).  The placeholder files are supported types (word, excel, ppt) and not large (<5MB) I rebooted both machines, started nothing running on them, let them sit for awhile (like over night). THEN I started one by one working backwards from the items on News.  It seems that many, many files are not syncing but yet, there is nothing in the logs nor nothing in the holding area on either machine.

My netbook is running windows xp and my laptop, win 7 64 bit.

If I'm borked, is there anything I can do to get to a whole version of my shared folder without going backwards and by hand seeing if changes were updated on both machines (yeah, I have over 5GB so not a candidate for keeping a version on Live Desktop)

  • So for anyone out there struggling with Live Mesh on Peer to Peer Syncing.....

I just switched to Live Sync, which only does peer to peer, I'm liking it better already as I have more information on exactly what's syncing (it shows exactly the # of files on the web, and on each device, it shows a list of the files as they are syncing, no waiting for the mesh logo that never spun) with the activity report AND even better, after weeks of struggling, KNOCK ON WOOD, IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING.....

  • Hmmm.....
I can't guarantee that this is the solution, but it is what I would try.
    1. Make a backup copy of both machine's Mesh folder(s) that you believe are out of Sync.
    2. Change the sync settings for the folder(s) via www.mesh.com Live Desktop to *not* sync with both machines.
    3. Log out of Live Mesh on both machines.
    4. On the Live Desktop, change the sync settings to sync with both machines.
    5. Sign into Live Mesh on both machines.
    6. Watch and wait.
If the folders merge and sync (don't worry about News - that is often inaccurate!), great.
If not, repeat steps 1 to 3 above.
Then, after the folders change to normal Explorer folders, uninstall Live Mesh from both machines.
Then remove both machines from the Mesh at www.mesh.com
And delete the folder(s) from the Live Desktop
Then reboot both machines, add them back to the Mesh, and set up the folder synchronization for the desired folder on one machine and configure it to sync with the second machine as before. When the Mesh folder is offered, click it and browse to the corresponding folder to merge with the existing folder.

Let me know if either of the above resolves the issue.

  • Thank you for your quick response.  I will try this tomorrow, I'm REALLY missing my mesh!!  I now take 2 machines home every night to ensure I have the files I need.

I will let you know how it goes.  Do you have any idea why this might have happened (or if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening in the future?)

  • Unfortunately, it might remain a mystery. I've had machines stop synchronizing in the Mesh and then just as mysteriously start again. And, in some case, the only way to get synchronizing to resume is the reinstall method.
Do let me know how you make out with the suggestion above.

  • Well, sadly, after several weeks of messing around, trying what you suggested above, I've gotten no where.  I saw a a menu option called "collect live mesh logs", would this be of help to debug?  I did the soft reset, and the full de-install/re-install and still couldn't get it working, I'd end up in the same place with place holders but the files wouldn't actually sync.  Also, I used to notice that the mesh icon would spin and you would get an estimate of how many MB/GB needed to sync.   That never happens any more.

I'm going to try a fresh restore and delete from the second machine (instead of trying to sync files) to give this one last try.  I'm rather dismayed though and sadly looking at other options.

  • The logs would help for filing a bug. I don't know enough about them to read them, though.

Sorry to read that the problem persist.

  • Well appreciate your responses.  I deleted everything, restored a test folder to one device.  I follow these steps

From the web I add device for both machines, install software, log on.

From the 64bit win 7 device, I right click the test folder, add to mesh, change sync settings to sync with 64bwin7 and 32bitxp, not with live desktop

I then get an error: MOE failed with status code: 401 Not authorized to access specific resource, but the folder on the 64bitwin7 device turns into a live mesh folder

So I go to the web, select the folder on the desktop, change the sync settings, no error there.

Then there are no spinning live mesh logos, no sign of how many megabytes to sync, but all the place holders show up on the 32bitxp device but nothing ever syncs.

I wish I remember what I did in the first place to get this to work.  Should I try Live Sync instead as I only really use the peer to peer syncing.  This was such a great product but I just don't know what to do at this point and I've spent many hours on it.

  • Glad to read that you like Live Sync. Rumor has it that Mesh and Sync will merge in the future, but details have not been announced. The not authorized error you encountered would be because the relationship with the folder that you deleted still existed in some way or other and it was lost. To start over, you would first want to change the folder sync settings, wait for the folder to become a non-mesh folder on each PC and then you could delete the local folder.
