Windows Home Server Connector Setup.exe RRS feed

  • Question

  •  I have just installed MS Home Server PP3 and it is working well. I have 4 computers on my home network. 2 of the computers connected to the server just fine, but I am having issues with the other 2. They are all running win XP SP3. The problem is with the Connector Client Software. The software finds the Server fine, and then says "downloading". It goes to 100% and then when it tries to run the Setup, it fails with no warning or any indication.

So then I tried to take a copy of the setup software from the server and tried to run it locally:

    04/04/2010  08:15 PM           224,104 Setup.exe
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM        15,376,896 WHSConnector.msi
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM         1,103,720 WHSConnectorInstall.exe
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM        16,313,344 WHSConnector_x64.msi
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM            41,320 WHSVersionUpgrade.dll
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM            43,880 WHSVersionUpgrade_x64.dll
    29/10/2009  02:17 PM            43,283 WHS_ConnectorHelp.chm

When I click the Setup.exe, the mouse pointer turns to an hour glass for about 3 seconds and then nothing happen.

The other 2 computers that did work, everything went as you would normally expect.

I checked the Windows Install MSI version on all 4 computers and they are all the same. The .Net 2.0 is the same on all 4 computers.

  • Try turning off any anti-virus on that PC whilst you install.  Think about what is different on this PC than the other 4 computers.  Also you can install the software from http://servername:55000/  though it will probably not be different.   Are you logged on as an administrator on that PC?

  • Thanks for your response Al. I did turn off Anti Virus on both computer, but the same issue. One computer is running AVG and the other Trend Micro. I was able to log into the server at http://servername:55000/ , but had similar results. I am an Administrator on both machines. This is the first time I have run into this issue with an install of any software in the computers.  I've had the computers for about 4 years.

One thing I did notice different from this computer compared to the others, is that the Windows "Help and Support" program did not work. I comes up with an error saying "Help and Support service missing". It has been like this for about 2 years and has never caused an issue with any of the software packages, and I never really use it so never pursued why it did not work.
