Static IP will not work on WHS Vail Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • This really baffles my mind.  I have two nics on the new server.

When I originally setup the machine, DHCP was enabled and assigned the proper information from my Win2008 r2 DC.

I want the Gigabit NIC Primary and on servers I prefer Static IPs so I set the following information.

    IP: 192.168.13.3   DGW: 192.168.13.1  DNS: 192.168.13.2/192.168.13.1  SubNet: 255.255.255.0

Server will not work, yet if DHCP Assigns the address it works???

    IP: 192.168.13.104 DGW: 192.168.13.1  DNS: 192.168.13.2/192.168.13.1  SubNet: 255.255.255.0

Everything but the IP is the same, I can ping, connect and such from any other machine to the WHS, but the WHS can not seem to "find the internet" with the 192.168.13.3 address.... yet it will if I give it the 192.168.13.104 address.

I have a Untangle Server and have the proper ports forwarded on my public ip, ports 80/443/4125 to 192.168.13.2, yet all I get is errors when on the WHS server itself.  It makes no sense why WHS server will not communicate with "the internet" unless it has a DHCP address.

I know I can give it a reserved address, but that really should not matter.

Either there's a typo above (in the highlighted bits) or you have an IP address collision when you manually configure your IP address. IP collisions are easy to create, and are a reason why best practice is generally to use DHCP reservations rather than fixed IPs at home.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
