Move WHS backups RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have several WHS backups for a machine named Vista.

I reloaded my Vista machine from my original Acronis image.  (I did not use WHS backups to do this).

When I installed the Server Connector software it created a 2nd PC on WHS with the same name (Vista).

So I need to remove the old occurence of Vista.

Question:  Can I move/save the backups that were originally created over to the new occurence of the Vista machine?

I have not been able to do this so far.

I hope this makes some kind of sense.

    Thanks

The backups are closely tied to the machine and while you only imaged the client, it must have been enough to make it think the backups are different. I doubt you'll ever be able to restore the other backups so you might as well delete them and start a new backup set or try restoring from WHS backup, instead of Acronis.

    Hope that helped...

  • Hi,

In the whs console, backup, select the computer you want the backup for it, click view backup, the nselecte one and click open.

When the view backup windows open, drag the folders you want to your local or exteranl hard disk.

That somehow a copy of that backup.

    My best.

Yes, I can drag the backup to my client machine, but that is not exactly what I want to do.

    Thank you for the reply.

As far as I can tell, you are correct that I can not move the backups where I want them on WHS.

The good news is that even though WHS created what I will call a new machine profile with a duplicate client name it does not seem to matter.

When I do a backup of the current machine, it goes into the right place (new profile).

Plus I can still restore files from the old profile even though the client name is grayed out.

I did not actually need anything from the old profile as I have several means of backing up that I use when testing something like WHS.

    Thanks for your help.
