MS Money Plus Premium on Windows XP SP3 crashes with bank download

Question
-
I am running MS Money Plus Premium (Version 17.0.125.1415) on Windows XP SP3 and yesterday I started having problems with Money crashing when I did a download from my bank or credit union. Prior to yesterday all data downloads in either OFX or QIF format worked perfectly with my version of Money. The interesting thing is that not all downloads produce the crash. I can download data from my Capitol One GM credit card site without a problem but downloads from Alliant Credit Union, Bank of America, Citibank and Citibank credit cards crash my program every time. I have tried directly downloading the data files into Money and have also tried saving them on my computer first and then importing them into Money and I get the same results (a crash) each time.
I just installed all of the Microsoft security updates on Tuesday, December 11, and I'm wondering if that could be the culprit here. This crash of Money when downloading bank data seemed to start after installing all of those security updates. Is anyone else having the same issue as I am after installing the most recent Microsoft security updates?
My workaround for now has been to restore Money to the last working backup copy that did not contain the data download causing the crash. The program works fine when doing that but it looks like I will have to manually enter all of my transactions from the offending bank/credit union/credit card sites until a fix for this is found. Any help or suggestions would be most welcome!

In my blog, I've got a link to the modified dll file that might help resolve your issue - even though the original intent was to fix the problem for 64-bit Windows 8. Just rename the dll in your MNYCOREFILES folder prior to copying in the new file in case you want to revert back.

I've got my Microsoft Money now working perfectly with update KB2758857 installed. I replaced my original mnyob99.dll file (version 17.0.0.1414) with the new modified/updated mnyob99.dll file (version 17.0.0.3817) that I downloaded from this link. The mnyob99.dll is located at C, Program Files, Microsoft Money Plus, MNYCoreFiles in my version of Money which is Money Plus Premium version 17.0.125.1415.
After replacing the dll file I installed update KB2758857 and then restarted my computer. I then tried updates from 3 different banking sites that included OFX and QIF downloads and my program worked perfectly with no crashes! These were the same downloads that had crashed my program (with update KB2758857 installed) prior to the replacement of the dll file.
For full disclosure I am using Internet Explorer 8 version 8.0.6001.18702 on Windows XP SP3. Thanks to others that have contributed to this thread to keep our Microsoft Money up and running.

You may be able to do a Windows system restore, if you have a suitable restore point, back to the point before the problem started. Then you might be able to add updates separately, and identify which update caused/triggered the problem.
When you crash, what is the actual error message?
Thursday, December 13, 2012 7:36 PMModerator -
I do have a restore point before the security updates were installed on Tuesday but I haven't gone that route yet. I'm assuming that's what the cause of my problem is but it could just be coincidental. I would expect others using Money Plus on Windows XP SP3 to have the same problem after they install the latest security updates if that was indeed the cause of the problem. So far I have not gotten any confirmation of that being the case from any posting here or from an internet search.
The error message says that "Money has encountered a problem and must close" and asks if I want to send an error report. It occurs as the download from the bank is being downloaded into the program. What's puzzling is that the download from Capitol One GM Card downloads perfectly without the crash but the downloads from Bank of America, Alliant Credit Union, Citibank and Citibank credit cards crash it every time. I wonder what's different about the downloads that causes that behavior?
Thursday, December 13, 2012 8:21 PM -
I encountered this issue when downloading from VALIC, and determined that the cause was negative dollar transactions. I withdrew all of my money and closed my accounts when they refused to correct their statements. Perhaps a scrubber routine needs to be written to remove the (-).

See http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21883
In the download is OFX Analyzer. It can look at an OFX file and check various rules. See if it identifies a problem with the problem OFX files. Its operation is a little arcane, but it is not bad.

I did an analysis of the OFX files that are causing my Money Plus to crash and I didn't find any problems. For each offending file this is what the analysis said:
*** All line number references do not include header lines ***
***OFX 1.02 Add ~10
***OFX 2.0 Add ~2

Done Analyzing FileI also confirmed that QIF file imports into Money are causing it to crash. Bank of America no longer offers OFX downloads so I have been using their QIF downloads to import my transactions for quite some time without any problems. When my problems started a few days ago with OFX file imports crashing Money I noticed that QIF imports from Bank of America are also crashing Money.

I am having same issues, worked fine last time I used it? 12/12/12 bug LOL !
Friday, December 14, 2012 3:06 PM -
Same thing here. Money crashes when I try to import certain OFX files. Once crashed, you
can no longer open the MNY file without getting another crash. If you repair the file, it will no
longer crash, but the account you imported to will say "31 pending transactions", but you won't
be able to see them.
I was able to fix it by uninstalling seven of the eight updates that happened
on 12/12. (I didn't uninstall the Malicious Software Removal Tool update because, ironically,
I couldn't find the entry to remove it).
So with the other seven updates off my system, I am able to once again import OFX files into
Money without it crashing. This beats entering everything in by hand!
When I get the time, I may install the updates one at a time and
see which one is actually the problem.

What version of Microsoft Money are you using and what is your operating system? Also, please confirm that you have downloaded and installed all of the Tuesday, December 11, security updates from Microsoft for your operating system.Friday, December 14, 2012 3:57 PM -
I should also add that there were reports of the exact same problem in a Windows 8 forum in November.
On Windows 8, some hacker found a way to modify four bytes in one of Money's dll's. I tried the hack,
but it didn't fix it for XP. Microsoft later issued a fix for this on Windows 8. It remains to be seen if they
would do they same for an almost-end-of-life OS when it effects an already discontinued product. Maybe
yes if the issue is also breaking other software packages like Quicken.

Really was the 12/12/12 bug ! Removed updates and all is working !Friday, December 14, 2012 4:47 PM

I found out which Microsoft update from December 11 is causing the problem with Microsoft Money crashing when downloading from your bank. It's update KB2758857. I started off by removing all of the Microsoft updates from December 11 and confirmed that Money was then working fine after they were all removed and a computer restart was done. I then added back the updates one at a time and did not have a problem until I added KB2758857. As luck would have it that was the last one to be added back!
So the bottom line is if you remove that one update and restart your computer you should be all set. At least we can keep the rest of the updates installed so that we are not totally vulnerable from these new security threats. Maybe Microsoft will come out with a new security update to cover the same security issue without crashing Microsoft Money! Until then, it WILL NOT get re-installed on my computer.

The only update that you need to remove is KB2758857. You also need to restart your computer after you remove it to finish the uninstall process. If Money is still crashing after that you need to restore to an earlier backup of your Money file. My Money Plus Premium backup files are located at My Computer, C:, Program Files, Microsoft Money 2005 but YMMV on your computer depending on where your Money backups are set to go.Sunday, December 16, 2012 6:45 AM -
Well now thats strange! If I dont click "send Report", Money will keep on working like nothing happened. Only thing is that the downloaded bank transactions arent there! Also, the bank account says the online service has expired and need to be updated!? and it looks like it is trying to do that except the connection cant be made for whatever reason. Is this the end for Money?Sunday, December 16, 2012 7:06 AM

You didn't state which version of Microsoft Money you are using and which operating system you are using. I am using Microsoft Money Plus Premium on Windows XP SP3 so I can only confirm that my steps worked for me with that version of Money and with that operating system. If either of those are different on your computer then YMMV.Sunday, December 16, 2012 7:14 AM -
bbalive, also indicate what down load process is being used (IE9?), and where the "bank account says the online service has expired and need to be updated" -- IE9 or within Money?
Most people getting downloads from a bank are using a web browser to get the OFX file.
Care to name the bank? Somebody may have experience with that bank.

running Money Plus Deluxe V17

contacting U S Bank within Money
I restored the backup file and so far it is working without crashing, also deleted KB2758857.
Looks like I wont be able to download bank transactions any more. Cant afford the hours of repair just for the ease of reconciliation. Thanks for your help. I wouldnt have gotten this far without the Forum.

Well heres a new wrinkle. My desktop money works but the laptop doesnt. unfortunately the laptop is the main residence of Money so I can track expenses when I am gone from home. The desktop downloaded transactions and processed them but the laptop crashed. only difference is the op system: laptop is XP Pro sp3, desktop is XP Media Centr SP3. Go figure???
PS, What does YMMV mean?

YMMV means that "your mileage may vary" meaning that if you are using a different version of Money, a different web browser and/or a different operating system than the ones I am using, my posted solution to the problem may not work for you (or even be applicable to you).
Make sure that you restart your laptop computer after uninstalling KB2758857 to complete the uninstall. I would also clear out the Internet Explorer cache and all temporary files just to cover all of the bases. Lastly make sure that you have disabled automatic installation of updates as KB2758857 will re-install itself silently in the background after you have manually uninstalled it and cause the same problems all over again!
Also have you tried taking a known good backup copy of your Money file from your desktop and restoring in on your laptop? Try that and see what happens. Once you get this problem resolved you shouldn't have any problems downloading bank transactions again. My Money program has been working just fine since I resolved this issue with multiple downloads done over the last few days.

Tried to delete KB2758857 but was it not listed under WIE8 Software Updates or anywhere else on the "add or remove programs" screen. Nor does Automatic Updates list KB2758857 as a security update option fro my system. Did delete KB2761465 that was downloaded 12/11/2012.

Try a system restore back to before the installation of the latest Microsoft updates (release date for them was 12/11) and see if that gets you up and running. I would suggest you set a restore point beforehand (for today) so that you can get back to where you are right now if you need to. Also, check your history on the Windows update page to see if it is listed there as having been installed. BTW my KB2758857 was listed under "Windows XP-Software Updates" in my add/remove program list after checking the "Show updates" box at the top of the page.Monday, December 17, 2012 1:12 AM -

I downloaded the file from the that link. "fciv -both" (file checksum integrity verifier) gave
MD5 SHA-1

e413d40c05d1a2fbe179ed0f776ee3bb 24811ab5c33e26bee3a984698636262be77a78c5 mnyob99.dll"fc /b" (file compare / binary) gave
003FACE8: 85 8D
003FACED: 50 51
003FACF0: FF 85
003FACF6: E8 B9So the file downloaded differered from my mnyob99.dll in my Money Plus Sunset installation by the four bytes described in the article. It passes my sniff test.
I think what happened here is that a mnyob99.dll bug did not usually cause crashing. When installed on Windows XP, update KB2758857 triggered crashing due to the existing mnyob99.dll bug. I have put the modified mnyob99.dll into my Money Plus Deluxe Sunset installation running on Windows 7 32-bit. It still works. So why did I make the change? It was mainly as a test, but it also may protect me against some later change.

If you want to find that in update XP, look at the Add/Remove Programs in the control panel. Tick the box at the top to include updates. However at this point, using the patched mnyob99.dll discussed in http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/money/thread/ca2c6a66-c16a-4ef4-9c76-a8d73438a172 would be the choice I would make instead. That would let you have that update in place, and would avoid a potential future occurance of that particular crash.Monday, December 17, 2012 5:40 PMModerator -

You need to make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked on your computer so that you can see the MNYCoreFiles folder where the dll is located. In Windows XP go to Tools, Folder Options, View, Advanced settings, Files and Folders, Hidden files and folders and check the circle in front of "Show hidden files and folders." On my computer the MNYCoreFiles folder is located in C, Program Files, Microsoft Money Plus.Monday, December 17, 2012 6:03 PM -
Checking "Show Hidden files and Folders" won't help you find the MNYCoreFiles folder, because for whatever perverse reason, MS designated the folder as a system folder. You therefore need to UNcheck the "Hide protected operating system files" box to see the folder. After you make your changes, be sure to go back and recheck the box.Tuesday, December 18, 2012 7:35 PM

You should be able to temporarily pause/disable your Norton protection so that you can do your download. After you do your download simply resume/enable your Norton protection.
I use Kaspersky Internet Security and I can pause protection by right-clicking on my Kaspersky icon in the lower-right taskbar. I'm not sure if your Norton security software works the same. If you can't figure it out do a Google search for "temporarily disable Norton" and you will get a wealth of information there to guide you in the right direction.

Did you do your own patching? Is the MD5 for your dll the same as I posted above?
If the mnyob99.dll has the same MD5, I would suggest that you make a repaired version of your Money file. File->Repair->StandardRepair, level 2.

You didn't mention if you had tried replacing the dll as has been mentioned in this thread. If not, you should follow the instructions above to update/replace the problem dll and see if that resolves your issue.
If you are still having problems after that I would opt to upgrade from your Money 2007 Deluxe to Money Plus Deluxe Sunset which you can download for free. (See the first thread of this Microsoft Money forum.) Before doing that I would set a system restore point so that you can get back to where you are right now in case you have any problems with the upgrade. You will also need to save a copy of your Money backup file so that you can import it into Money Plus Deluxe Sunset after you get it installed. I would recommend not only saving a copy on your computer but also on an external source just in case. You don't want to risk losing all of your data.
Use the add/remove programs list to uninstall Money 2007 Deluxe, restart your computer and then install the Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe Sunset. Keep in mind that you will need to do the same dll fix on your newly-installed Money Plus Deluxe Sunset program as the download will have the original/problem dll. Let us know how you make out so that others with the same issue as you using Money 2007 Deluxe on Windows XP Home SP3 can learn from your troubleshooting.

I tried the DLL fix and after a fresh reboot had the same problem that would not allow me to input entries into my accounts. Tried everything suggested and ended up leaving KB2758857 out of the updates and now able to input. Using XP Home with both Money sunset Delux and also Money Home and Business. Killed the auto updates so that KB2758857 will not reload. I use Money on my home accounts and three non-profits to help track securities. This is the first problem with MS Money in ages.
Do you have both Money Deluxe Sunset and Money Home and Business installed on the same computer? If so, did you do the dll fix in the program files of both programs?
Also, as a data point, which version of Windows XP Home are you running? Are you at SP3?

If you are still having problems after that I would opt to upgrade from your Money 2007 Deluxe to Money Plus Deluxe Sunset which you can download for free.
Money Plus Deluxe Sunset will not do direct online access for quotes or statements. If the Money 2007 is still functioning for those online things, I would not be quick to move to Sunset.Sunday, December 23, 2012 3:54 PMModerator -
yes, I have several computers running either Delux or Home & Business and both had the same problem. Did the DLL fix to both programs in each machine and still would not allow me to input data. Ran the repair level 2 with the same outcome. Also running a couple of machines with W7 and not having any problem with them. Eliminated the KB update and everything is fine. Have made the update with the DLL after removal of the KB update ran fine. reinstalled the KB update with the DLL update and crash again on not allowing keyboard inputs in the registers. Removed KB again and running fine so leaving the KB update off the XP machines both the PRO and the Home. All XP machines have been SP3 ever since it was released.Tuesday, December 25, 2012 12:28 AM

The DLL update was done with hex editor as mentioned on your post earlier. I have verified the DLL is correct and the version updated. I did the file repair, level 2 when I was doing the trials and with many cold boots, safe boots, etc. Tried several different times with the updated DLL and reinstalling the KB update but still could not do a keyboard input to the register unless I have the KB update removed.Tuesday, December 25, 2012 12:34 AM

Re-down loaded the DLL fix. Rebooted machine with xp-home. started MS Money plus home & business. KB has not been reinstalled. Tried to type in register entry and when moving to input $ amount get error message as follows: mnyob99.dll ver 17.0.0.3817 offset3fb8f6. closed money. installed KB update kb2758857 and rebooted. started money again. tried to key entry in register again received same error msg. Removed KB update and restored DLL to orginal. Everything works fine with typing in registry entry and bank downloads. using XP sp3.Tuesday, December 25, 2012 2:24 AM

I removed this and an update that depended on it. MS Money 2007 Deluxe on XP SP3 is now able to import my bank's OFX files again!
I haven't tried the dll fix. I grabbed it though just in case I need to go that route eventually.

KB2758857 is the offending update. I uninstalled it and normal operation of Money has been restored. Windows update kept trying to re install it so I went to the update site and blocked it. So far so good.Saturday, December 29, 2012 12:58 PM

If you don't do the Money dll fix as described/suggested in this thread and then reinstall the KB2758857 update, you will be leaving your computer vulnerable to the security threats addressed by that update.Saturday, December 29, 2012 2:05 PM -
Yep just got the file replaced and reinstalled the update. All is well. Thanks to all who helped with this issue.Saturday, December 29, 2012 2:27 PM

I also replaced the file and this solved the issues I was having with two financial institutions. Thanx for the help. Yea, and why doesn't MS release the source code? It would be a great benefit to everyone that purchased the product. What possible reason would there be not to release it?Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:04 PM

How about preventing people from breaking the file encryption and simply preventing people from making money by selling a different version of MSmoney.

I've got my Microsoft Money now working perfectly with update KB2758857 installed. I replaced my original mnyob99.dll file (version 17.0.0.1414) with the new modified/updated mnyob99.dll file (version 17.0.0.3817) that I downloaded from this The mnyob99.dll is located at C, Program Files, Microsoft Money Plus, MNYCoreFiles in my version of Money which is Money Plus Premium version 17.0.125.1415.
Thank you to all who worked on solving this problem....I like Microsoft Money and have used it for many years, and like to continue to do so. The deleting of KB2758857 worked very well. I un-installed and re-installed Microsoft Money Plus from Microsoft and it is the same version you mention 17.0.0.3817. Thank you again.

Yes. Thanks for the link to update the dll. It worked great. I wish Microsoft would have kept this program in stock and supported. I cannot find anything better.Tuesday, January 1, 2013 1:28 AM

Most of the posts agree that there are two strategies for dealing with this problem; replace the mnyob99.dll file with an altered .dll file or uninstall the Windows update
KB2758857. I would like to try the file replacement strategy buy I can find neither the MNYCOREFILES folder nor the mnyob99.dll file on my computer.I am
Suggestions?

In Windows Explorer do a search for mnyob99.dll OR in Windows Explorer under Folder and Search Options uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended). Ignore the warning and check OK. You should then be able to find the MnyCoreFiles folder in Program Files. Be sure to recheck that option after, as revealing the system files can cause problems.

In addition to what bobjbkln said, the folder you are trying to get to is usually at
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles"

Thanks. Hidden files/folders found. Substitution made. Files hidden again. Now to see if it did the trick. I appreciate yours and Cal Learners quick response.Monday, January 7, 2013 4:05 AM
