CRM IFD Error - discovery web service could not be accessed with claims based authentication on ADFS 2.0 RRS feed

  • Okay, after several builds of CRM and ADFS and some support from the community, the last obstacle is an error that doesn't seem to be well documented.

    In the CRM IFD Claims settings when specified Discovery service to dev.domain.com as it should be, I get "Discovery web service could not be accessed. The domain is unavailable or does not exist." as a Root Error. 

    DNS is verified - pinging that domain resolves in the appropriate IP on both the ADFS and CRM servers. 

    Surely this is a common error, as I've run into it on two builds in entirely different environments.

    Am I missing a step in CRM deployment where the discovery web should be setup?
