Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 This Copy of Windows is not genuine

    Question

  • Hi,

My laptop just broke, forcing me to bust out my old dell inpiron desktop from the closet.

I got this computer a few years ago. Vista worked fine on it but I always booted ubuntu and I used it for about a year.

Now I am having to use windows for some programs that I need at work that aren't available on ubuntu so I booted vista and was met with a prompt to activate my version of vista.

I have the black desktop with the title of this post in the corner like everyone sees with this issue. My windows security essentials wont  scan because I'm not validated, and until I changed my date an d time to the current date and time I wasn't able to use chrome, ie, or firefox without having to waive security warnings (nopt sure if that is related).

I read that it was an issue with a bad version of sp2 so I removed and reinstalled. this didn't work but I read that it was sp1 so I tried to reinstall but couldn't find it. so I tried to install it and it says that it is all ready intalled.

I have tried entering the key on my towers sticker but it cant actiavte this version. I have found and have tried entering the oem key but it won't allowing me to enter the "o" so I obviously am unable to enter the rest of the key to see if it is working.

I have restored my system back top he earliest possible date, I have tried rebooting in safe mode to try and catch something that could give me a clue, but nothing.

here is my diagnostic report. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have summer classes starting next week and I desperately need a computer.

  • The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store -

    please try the following.....

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.

    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type: net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice.

You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • I tried this and it didn't work. Once I got to step 10 of the instructions (Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc) I got the following error message:

CScript Error: Can't find script engine "VBScript" for script "C:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs".

  •   CScript Error- Can't find script engine VBScript -alternate solution   should help.

If not, please give the EXACT error messages you get when attempting the fix.

  • Please start a NEW thread of your own, and post an MGADiag report.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

      - in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
