  • Hi,

You could try copying the appropriate files from the Connector folder on your Shared Folders onto the Client and then running the setup locally.

  • I'll second Colin's suggestion (to run Setup.exe, from \\server\Software\Home Server Connector Software), and add to that the suggestion that you toss the Connector CD in the trash.
Reason:  the Connector software is updated from time to time (via automatic updates to the server.)  What you have on CD is already quite outdated, and will continue to become even more so.  Best case (from installing an outdated version):  'network health' warnings, and the need (you may or may not get a prompt, depending on how old the mismatched software is) to update it anyways (from share); worst case:  can't connect the new client to the server.

It is possible to install the Connector and join a Win7 machine to the server, using the latest Connector version; in fact, I just did it myself about 2 hours ago.  Worked just fine, no issues at all.

    HTH,
    Chris

I would not recommend discarding the original Connector CD that you might have received with your OEM server. Should you ever have to perform a server recovery or factory reset on your OEM server, you will need to go through the OOBE setup process on a client PC. Server recovery/factory reset will set the version of the server back to whatever is on the DVD you will have received with the server itself, not the version of the software after all updates to date. Without the matching Connector CD, you may find that you can't do that, due to mismatched versions.

    I learned something new today!
Slightly OT question, Ken:  you'd apply that statement only to owners of an OEM-built (HP, etc) WHS, correct?  'Cause, us homebuilders can always update their WHS boxen locally...

  • If you go all the way through setup on the server, including running the OOBE setup (Starting with the Vista-like Welcome screen and button) then no, you don't need to worry. My caution was only for those who have OEM servers with a server recovery disk, rather than a Windows Home Server installation disk.
