memory usage increase in newer ICE (2.0.2) // download link older version (1.4.4) RRS feed

  • Question

  • First of all, I'd like to thank everyone involved in this research.

I have been using the Image Composite Editor (ICE) for years and it has always proved invaluable!

Thus, I eagerly installed the new version (2.0.2) and just now redid a few panoramas I had done a few days prior.

Then, in a few cases, I received some message errors saying the program had run out of memory.

Because I did the very same panoramas in the previous version (1.4.4), I assume the new version uses more memory for the same task of stitching still photos.

The computer with the newer ICE installed is the same that housed its previous incarnation:

    - Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53GHz)

    - 4GB RAM

    - Windows 7 64-bit

    - Nvidia GTX 260M

    - 250GB SSD (Samsung EVO 840) + 1TB HD (Seagate)

I may install the new ICE in another more powerful computer to test the video features, but I'd like to point out that a download link for the previous version is still welcomed.

Because I couldn't find any in the microsoft website, I had to hunt for a link in an out-of-date file repository just to find the install file for the 1.4.4 version.

    Best wishes,

  • I'm very surprised that you are hitting an out of memory error on 64bit machine, especially if you are not hitting this issue when performing the same task in a previous version. Can you give any more details on where you were in the processing when you saw this, what exactly the error message was.

One other quick thing to check - under options (the gear symbol on top right), that the "memory consumption limit" is somehow set funny, e.g. using all of your available memory

  •   Greetings, Matt.

I just installed ICE version 2 again to take a screenshot of the error I reported.

Afterwards, I uninstalled version 2 and installed version 1.4 and then successfully redid this one troublesome stitching.

      Memory settings:

      Version 1.4 performance:

Previously, such error showed up in a few opportunities.

Sometimes, when I cleared the computer memory of every process possible, ICE would complete the stitching.

Other times, I didn't try cleaning up more memory and just moved on to keep checking the resulting images produced by the new version.

Eventually, I uninstalled version 2 and went hunting for the install files of the previous version.

Screenshots and the offending images have been uploaded to this OneDrive folder:

      Best regards,

  • Thanks for sending this. I'm not able to reproduce the memory issue on my machine.

    - could you tell me how far the progress bars got at the point that ICE returns this failure.

    - although yours is set reasonably, you could also try lowering the "Memory consumption limit" in the "Options" dialog as a work-around.

  •   Sorry for the late reply... (:

The error message shows up the very instant the upper progress bar is completely filled; before anything changes in the lower progress bar.

I will surely try to tweak the memory settings when I install the newer version again!  (:
