Stolen Keystrokes RRS feed

  • Question

  • The only real annoyance I find with One Care is when the firewall pops up in the middle of my typing and steals my keystrokes to answer the "allow program to access the internet" popup.  Then I have no idea how how it was answered, and no way to turn it back on if it was disabled or ignored.  Though the program is usually disallowed, there are no disallowed entries in the firewall's list.

    Anyone have practical suggestions (other than turn the whole thing off)?

  • Open OneCare, click on Change Settings, Firewall tab, Advanced.

    You'll find a list of allowed and blocked programs that you can change their status as desired.

  • As I said, that list is not accurate.  I have frequently had programs that are being blocked, but are not listed as blocked in that list.  I have that situation at this very moment.  The only solution that has worked in the past is to use "Restore Defaults" and then answer the block question all over again for all the programs as they try to access the internet.

    The problem with the program not being found in the list may only occur when several versions of the same software have been installed; something that would be uncommon in normal use, but is unaviodable in my situation.

    The problem with the keystorke stealing happens with many programs that pop up such alert dialogues.  There are better ways to show an alert than to take focus and immediately begin accepting keystrokes.  I was wondering if there was already a way to accomplish that with One Care.

  • Can you provide examples of programs that were blocked and not on the list?

  • I am not sure exactly what you are looking for, but here's a recent example;

    I have a communications service that provides the connection between a point of sale machine and the central location.  I have compiled 20-30 versions  of this program.  Every time I compile One Care (correctly) determines it is a new program to either block or not.  The name stays the same, the program version usually stays the same.  The program doesn't access the internet immediately, and runs in the background, so frequently I am typing in another program.  Several times (5 or 6 I think) the Allow/Block popup came up while I was typing something else, took a keystroke and disappeared, leaving my service unable to access the internet.  When I looked at the list, none of the entries for my service showed as blocked.  When I "Removed" all the entries with that name and "Applied' it did not help (and the entries were back next time I looked anyway).  When I reset to the default, it properly gave me the Allow/Block popup again.

    The communication service is a .Net 2.0 application that talks to a web service.

  • Thanks, that's helpful information. I think that the reason the list is inaccurate is because you are recompiling the program and the list only shows one instance of the version.

    I understand the stealing focus concern, but I'm not sure there is a way around it.
