If you are running Windows Home Server on a system that was once used as a home computer, and you have finished using the external monitor for initial set up and etc. The video card is not necessary. However, it uses very little resources and power and if there is an issue with the internet or your home network, using the externall monitor is the only way to access the GUI and "see" what you are doing....

you will not need one after completing the installation, but even the cheapest PCI card is sometimes usefull for troubleshooting, if you don't reach your server via network.
Also if you have no dedicated server hardware supporting headless usage, it may happen that the boot process stops already at Bios level, if certain hardware components are missing.
But if there is a functioning cideo card in, you should also see the output, which each Windows PC delivers.
If it does not, you may have to check the seating of the video card in the slot on the mainboard.

Hi,
Your Client uses the signals from the server software and displays them on your local computer, it doesn't rely on anything in the graphics system on the server to provide the information. This is why you can run the server without any form of graphics, either integrated or seperate.

Hi again,
Unless you are a systems integrator/builder with pre-prepared images, you cannot install WHS without a keyboard/video setup, as there are user interactions required.
I think we were all assuming you meant running the system, (if your motherboard supports operation without), which is where you don't require any KVM.
