Suddenly I find that my software is invalid RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

A few months ago I bought a copy of Office 2007, installed it and have been using it ever since without a problem. However in the last few days I get a message telling me it is invalid.  Running the diagnostic tool I get :-

The installed Office 2007 Professional Plus is an edition of Office that is sold only thru the Volume Licensing program to businesses, educational institutions and governmental agencies.  This installation was done with an invalid Product Key made by a pirating program known as a Key Generator.  The product key was NOT issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

Also, the installed Visio Professional 2007 is also a volume licensing edition of Visio only properly sold as above to businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies.

If you are an individual consumer, you probably bought what you thought was a Genuine retail licensed copy of Office 2007 Professional, but unfortunately, you ended up with this pirated edition of Office.  Likewise, the use of a Volume Licensing copy of Vision Professional without an accompanying valid Volume Licensing Agreement constitutes a nongenuine use of this software.   If that's the case, you should return the copy of Office and Visio to the place of purchase and demand the Genuine software you paid for, or a full refund.

  • Thanks for the information. This is really bad news as I am living on a pension. I bought the product from an EBay trader and it was not cheap. The packaging seems genuine as does the license key and i have been using it for 9 months. I also have an audit trail back to the seller together with his name and address and details of the pay pal transaction.
    So I really have 2 questions :-

    a) Why did it take the Microsoft Validation system 9 months to find out that my software is invalid? I suspect after such a time it is going to be really difficult to get my money back from the seller.

    b) Given that I have a complete audit trail is that of any value to to whoever Microsoft use to investigate fraud? In other words can I get a discount on Office for providing this information, the discs and packaging etcetera? I have a complete, evidenced, audit trail.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Hello Steve Farthing,

At the end of August/beginning of September 2009, Microsoft began deployment of much-revised versions of the Office Genuine Advantage Validations and Notifications utilities.  Up until this roll-out, the only way you would have known your Office was nongenuine would have been to either deliberately visit the www.microsoft.com/genuine page and run the Office Validation utility, or to have attempted to download "nice-to-have" Office templates and add-on goodies from Microsoft's downloads site.  These downloads are "gated"---in other words, to get them you would have to agree to have the Validations Utility check your Office.

The current implementation of OGA is now just like that for WGA, in that it is now being deployed as an Important (but not a Critical) Windows Update.  So many, many more people are having OGA run on their systems than before, and as you might suspect, many more installations of Office are being discovered to be Nongenuine.

In your case, if you purchased a product that was advertised and represented to you as a retail copy of Office Professional 2007, and was shipped to you in an Office Professional 2007 package, which had in it a disc that has Office Professional 2007 printed on its Genuine-looking hologram, yet upon installation you ended up with a copy of Office Professional Plus 2007 with an invalid product key, then you would certainly seem to qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer.

Here in the forums we normally recommed to people in your situation that they first pursue satisfaction from the place/person from whom they purchased the nongenuine software, so that the normal discourse of business can be reinforced.  By that I mean buyers who have paid for goods they did not properly receive should first pursue normal remedies if available, such as filing disputes with PayPal or equivalents and with Credit Card companies and with local consumer protection agencies.  If such remedies don't work out, Microsoft provides a fall-back position to offer some relief to the victim in the form of discounted or complimentary replacements to those who qualify.

So for you, if your normal remedies of filing a dispute with eBay/PayPal and/or following up with whatever consumer protections are available to you does not provide relief, by all means I would encourage you to submit your piracy report and materials to Microsoft for evaluation for possible complimentary replacement.
