  • The news isn't good, I'm afraid - The few times this error has appeared in these forums, we've been unable to solve it - and the feedback from those we referred to MS Support is that MS were also flummoxed.

Even worse, the two reports we have had back are that a repair install failed, and a clean install was required to fix the problem.

If you want to continue to try and solve it here, then I'm game - but it could be a long and arduous road (which we may never get to the end of).

Otherwise, first try a repair install, and if that fails, then a clean install.

  • Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Historically, we've only been able to cure this problem using System Restore - have you tried that?

What software did you install recently? - anything like Alcohol 120%? (which is known to cause varied problems with Win7)

  • Thanks again Noel,

I haven't tried System restore, but the restore points don't go back far enough, so I doubt they'll rectify the issue. The Windows update problem has been around for quite some time (maybe 12 months?). I haven't really needed to use the laptop, so I never looked further into it. The system was running really poorly and, following some nline reading, I thought it might be McAfee and removed that recently. It's running a lot better now, but still can't run updates.

Is there something else I can try?

IS this issue likely to effect anyhing other than windows updates? If not, is worth just updating windows manually (if that is possible?)

As for programs, not that I can think of. Majority of the programs are pretty standard. Maybe Endnote?

    Cheers

    Paul

  • It's likely that the problem isn't going to be confined to automatic updates - or even manual updates.

When you uninstalled McAfee, did you run their cleanup tool? What did you install in its place?

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.

right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'  to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

    The run another MGADiag report.

  • I'm pretty sure I did run the removal tool when I uninstalled it originally, but I re-ran it just in case
