FAQ: How to recover data after server failure
Having said that, you might still be able to get Server Reinstallation. You need to wipe the OS partition (the one that's 20 GB), either by formatting that partition or using a tool such as DISKPART. Just be careful in these scenarios and make sure you are selecting the correct partition (otherwise it will wipe your DATA partition which may have data on it).- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Thursday, May 14, 2009 12:01 AM

thanks alot kariya
but can you please tell me simple what to do with the utility
This FAQ post explains how to use diskpart: How to reinitialize a disk, which is not accepted for the storage pool. (Although the post doesn't apply to you, the diskpart steps are still correct.)
However, to be honest, if you don't feel comfortable doing this, my suggestion is don't do it. Instead, you could try to find a friend/co-worker who is really good with computers and knows what diskpart is to do it for you.- Marked as answer by Jonas Svensson -FST- Saturday, June 13, 2009 1:31 AM

ok i just did it
it worked well i guess i still see all my shared folders
but 1 problem though
3 of my 8 harddrives has not been identified as part of the pool
i tryed to move the files in the ( the DA hidden folder ) manually but i keep getting its prohibited
i tryed to use the remove feature to transfer all files but then i am getting that my pool total space is 97gb but free space is 1.5 tb
so i am getting not enough space message
and i am getting that all three harddrives are not running correctly 9 although i tested one of them as an external drive on xp and it was working fine
here is a pic of my stats : http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/4278/capturec.jpg
what should i do now ?Friday, May 15, 2009 9:38 PM -

My suggestion would be to try another Server Reinstallation and make sure you see all 8 hard drives in the Load Additional Storage Drivers screen before proceeding.Sunday, May 17, 2009 2:48 PMModerator -

You might need to use Diskpart then. Just make sure you select the correct (20 GB OS) partition because if you don't, you will lose all of the data on the DATA partition.Sunday, May 17, 2009 6:28 PMModerator -

Yes. If you want to backup/recover the files from your server manually, check this FAQ post: How to recover data after server failure.Sunday, May 17, 2009 11:17 PMModerator -
mmmmm
tobe honest i am scared to do anything that endanger the data
waht if i brought a new hard drive and did a fresh installation on it
will i be able to restore the old pool on the new system ?Tuesday, May 19, 2009 11:42 PM -
Yes. Just install WHS with a new drive installed only.
Then following the directions under "copy the data manually to a new location ."Wednesday, May 20, 2009 2:00 AM -
where can i find those directions exactly ?Wednesday, May 20, 2009 3:49 PM

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Friday, May 22, 2009 3:09 PMModerator -
thats the path for one of them
G:\DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}Friday, May 22, 2009 3:12 PM -
Thoe are components of the backup database. The only files you should worry about are in the folders under <drive>:\DE\shares.

I have moved my 1Tb HDD into my W7 PC. 20GB of this was my WHS partition, the rest was my DATA. I cannot seem to copy anything from the shares folder to my desktops HDD. When I try to use diskpart, it does not see the 20GB partition as a disk. It only sees the entire drive. How or can I do a "clean" on just the 20gb partition in order to do a server reinstall?Friday, November 27, 2009 4:32 AM

That's probably because you are trying to copy tombstones, not actual files. The actual files are stored on the secondary drives (assuming your server has more than 2 drives). See the post I linked to above called How to recover data after server failure.
When I try to use diskpart, it does not see the 20GB partition as a disk. It only sees the entire drive.
Then you are missing a command when using diskpart. Did you look at the Diskpart link I provided above?
How or can I do a "clean" on just the 20gb partition in order to do a server reinstall?
Yes, you can. First, before doing anything in this thread, try doing a Server Reinstallation. See the FAQ post: How do I upgrade from the evaluation/trial to a full copy of WHS? for details on how to do that. (Even though the subject is different, the steps are the same.)Friday, November 27, 2009 4:54 AMModerator -
Thank you for the quick response. Indeed I was missing the selection steps. I chose the drive, then the volume, cleaned it and reinstall is running right now. Thanks again.Friday, November 27, 2009 5:01 AM
