Vist Validation Error Code 0xc004e002 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have searched the forums but my problem seems to be slightly different to the other WGA problems.

HP laptop with OEM edition of Vista Home Premium.

Vista was working fine and then the DVD drive stopped working for some reason then when starting up and logging in to any profile
     I get the following Error:-

    "Windows Activation
    An error has occurred
    Code: 0xC004E002
    Description:
The software licensing service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data"

When I log into Safe Mode I get a dialog box saying:-

    "Windows Activation
Restart your computer in normal mode to activate windows
Your activation period has expired. Restart your computer in normal mode to activate windows"

When I start in normal mode and log onto a profile I get

I cannot access anything beyond this dialog box. No Start button anywhere.
When I click "Close" on the normal boot up it drops me out to the login screen.
I have looked at the other fixes but they seem to require me to open IE or click the Start button but these are not accessible. I did try to run the scripts from the Repair console command prompt but nothing happens.
I have done a system restore to almost every point I can and it makes no difference.

What few remaining follicles I have clinging to my head are in great danger of being torn out in frustration.
    All help welcomed.

All I can do is access some help files via an option on the dialog box.
Diagnostic reports are not available as I cannot get past the error screens.

That is why I asked for the Options that are provided to you.  If I assume correctly, the option that takes you to the "help files" is labled "Learn More Online" or "Help resolve issue" (or something similar) and does so by opening an Internet Browser.

If that is correct, please follow the below steps to generate a Diagnostic Report:

    1) Login to Vista and Click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.

    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.

    3) A window will come up asking if you want to Run or Save, Select Run

    4) When the program runs, Click the Continue button, then click the Copy button.

    5) Return to this thread by Typing: http://forums.community.microsoft.com/en-US/genuinevista/thread/cbc8a38b-898c-4d3e-b3c1-79773dc385e7 into the browser address bar.

    6) In a reply post, Paste the Diagnostic Report.

If I am incorrect and that option does not open a Internet Browser or if you have any additional issues generating the report, then my ability to troubleshoot over the Forums is limited and I would advise creating a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 for assistance.

    Thanks,
    Darin

  • Hi Andy,

You lost me when you were explaining what happens when you login to normal mode. Would you describe, in more detail, what you see. (specifically, exact message text and what options (if any) are given in that Dialog).

If it turns out that you can not generate a Diagnostic Report, there is not much I can do, here on the forums, and I would suggest creating a (no cost) support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 for additional assistance

  • When startup in Normal mode it arrives at the screen to select one of my two profiles. I select the either profile and I get a black screen with a dialog box saying :-

    "Windows Activation
    An error has occurred
    Code: 0xC004E002
    Description:
The software licensing service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data"

There is nothing else on screen - everything is black. All I can do is access some help files via an option on the dialog box.
Diagnostic reports are not available as I cannot get past the error screens.

    Thanks

    Andy

    and now?

    Friday, September 18, 2009 8:14 AM
  • I know that this answer is late but I hope that I can help out anyone else looking for a solution

I installed service pack 2 on a server 2008 xenserver VM and after the reboot all I got was a box in the middle of the screen with a help link as described by AndyWhiteLaw. Microsft provides solution to problem but the their solution assumes that you already have access to windows explorer and the command prompt.

I have compiled a new solution using my own solution to access windows explorer and the command prompt then following their directions to fix the license file.

You can find microsofts solution by googling the following KB article 978305 or clicking the following link

    http://www.mskbarticles.com/index.php?kb=978305

I have screen shots and willing to email them out. Unfortunately, this forum does not allow posting of screen shots. You can email  chaotix2003.at.gmail.dot.com

    My solution is below:

    Solution:

    1.       Click on the link (You can also contact Microsoft by phone to help resolve this problem). The link with bring up the following help screen to the right.

    2.       Click on any of the links in the help menu to bring up internet explorer.

    3.       On the task bar type c:\  to bring up windows explorer

    4.       Create a shortcut to the command prompt . Right click on the shortcut and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

    5.       Type net stop slsvc

    6.       Type cd %windir%\serviceprofiles\networkservice\appdata\roaming\microsoft\softwarelicensing

    7.       Type ren tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8.       Type net start slsvc

    9.       Go to c:\windows\system32

    10.       Type cscript slmgr.vbs –rilc

    11.       After you receive the message that the license files have been reinstalled successfully, restart the machine twice

    12.       After you log in, re-enter your windows 2008 activation key and reactivate.

There's nothing obviously wrong with the report - except....
    1) You didn't post it in your own, new, thread
    2) the 0xc004e002 error.

This makes me think that perhaps your Licensing store has become corrupted for some reason.
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store file.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. Be sure to use the Product key on the sticker on the side or bottom of the PC (some laptops may have the sticker located in the battery compartment) To Activate, please use the Activate by Phone option.

You machine has a number of problems
    1) It has an install of an Acer version of Windows, on what appears to be  retail motherboard
    2) The File Mismatch highlighted above
    3) the Licensing service problem highlighted above

For what version and edition of Windows is your computer licensed, according the the COA Sticker on the case (if it has one)?
Does the Key on the Sticker (if present) match the parts visible in the report?

First you need to attempt to fix the file mismatch problem - try this
run the System File Checker, and see if that can repair the file.

    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search  box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
     - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot, twice.

Run a new MGADiag report, and paste it in your response
