Windows Vista not Genuine...Still No Response From Windows About This Issue....

  • I bought an HP from Circuit City a few years ago, with Windows Vista installed on it.  Now I get the black screen of death.  This copy of Windows not valid.

    Your problem is that the OS cannot properly read the SLIC table in the BIOS, which is needed for the system to be able to self-activate.
    As you suspect – the usual solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker. Have another look for it, as it’s possible that the only other option is a System Recovery, taking your system back to ex-factory condition.
     
    The following will attempt to rebuild the Licensing Store – which forces the machine to re-evaluate the SLIC table. It *may* help.
     
    Please try the below steps to recreate the Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    You could also try installing Service Pack 1 – again, this may, or may not work. If not, try installing Service Pack 2 – which will at least allow you to continue working on the machine until you can do a System Recovery.

  • Also, I just realized that the COA sticker under my laptop is gone. Is this going to pose a problem, because I just noticed an old post from Microsoft saying to use that.
