Safe to use WHS as a download target? (re: internet downloads, torrents, etc) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ok, so before I take the plunge I'm a little concerned about data corruption. I remember reading about the original release of WHS and that awful data corruption "bug" but I know it's been fixed in Power Pack 1.

However, is it safe to use the WHS server as a location to save torrents and other downloads? (eg. it will be saving to the WHS server while the file is downloading, etc)

Another example would be using SABnzbd and downloading a bunch of files from Usenet but after it downloads them it usually repairs them (using PAR) and then extracts the files from the RARs.

Is this safe to do directly on the WHS machine? (or on a client machine that saves directly to the WHS server using network shares)

  • I would download locally and then move the final result when done, but that's for performance reasons. If you download directly to your server using a client computer, all that data needs to be moved across your network two or more times. Network access will be significantly slower than local.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
