Automatic update won't turn on RRS feed

  • Question

  • System: Windows XP
    3rd party security: Norton 360
    Stand alone computer (no server)

The windows security shield in the lower right corner identifies that the automatic updates is not on. I can't turn it on from the security center page when I click on the "red" shield (w/ a white "x"). Get a message "Sorry the Security Center could not turn on automatic updates". I then went to manually turn it on. When I bring up the automatic updates, it shows the "automatic (recommended)" is selected. The "apply" button at the bottom is shaded out. I click on the "ok" but nothing changes. I then tried to select the next option down on the Automaric updates, clicked "apply" then "ok". Still nothing. When I reopen the page it shows the new option as selected. I then reselected the "Automatic (recommended", click "apply" and then "ok". Nothing changes.

I tried turning off norton 360 to see if I could fix it. No success. I even uninstalled norton 360 and I still can't get the automatic updates to turn on.
