Looking for a good way to consolitate my Icon files (make my own Icon library) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to find a way to search for all/most of the existing icon files on my computer and copy/paste them into one file or folder so they're together all in one place. (I'm using Windows XP, SP2/SP3).  I only want the files that are intended to be icons but I don't want to go file by file to do this, so if there's some alternate way of doing this, I'd like to find out about it.

I've searched through some of the forums and the solution center, etc.  I'm finding either super-basic instructions for changing a folder icon (which I already know how to do), or else it's a forum with super-experts talking about things that are way over my head, since I'm not a programmer or a computer specialist, etc.

I don't want to mess around with writing code or changing the registry or any of those things where you need to know what you're doing or you might screw things up big time. :)   But I do know that the basic icon file format is an .ICO file, and that icons can sometimes be  BPM, JPEG, TIFF, and GIF files (and maybe others), and they can be inside .DLL and .EXE files .  But I don't know how to pull the icons out of a .DLL or .EXE file, and I'm not sure I should be messing with application files anyway.

p.s. I'm not comforable downloading free icons or "icon managers" from random web sites, and I'm not in the market to buy a software package with thousands of icons.

    I'd appreciate any suggestions...
    Thanks!
