off topic - windows update problems

  I recently installed a new hard drive and now when I go to microsoft windows update, I get to the "checking for updates" screen with the bar scrolling, but no further.  Anyone have ANY idea what I need to do to get an actual update going on?  I can go onto and upload the updates thru the update center, but it doesn't complete when I try to do an automatic update.  I also validated my software.
