Validation issue Office 2003 - says not activated, but it is RRS feed

  • Question

  • I activated Office over the phone. However, it won't let me validate. When I ran the diagnostics it told me that I still needed to active Office. However, when I tried to activate, it said that it was already activated. I went through all of the diagnostics steps, downloaded the software and still it says that my software is not activated. What do I do now?

  • Hello serena_b,

To resolve the issue, we just need to delete the file and it will regenerate once you re-Validate.

Please follow the step below and report on if this had resolved your issue or not.

(Please Note: To successfully complete the below steps, you must be an Administrator for the computer. If you are not the Administrator, please contact the person that is and request that they follow the below steps.)

    Windows XP:

    1)      Click the “Start” button.

    2)      Click “Run…”

    3)      Type: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Office Genuine Advantage\data

    4)      Delete the file: data.dat

    5)      Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the Validate Office button.

    Windows Vista:

    1)      Click “Start” button.

    2)      Type: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Office Genuine Advantage\data

    3)      Delete the file: data.dat

    4)      Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the Validate Office button.

After you have completed these steps and you are still experiencing issues with validation then please rerun the MGA diagnostic tool and post the results as a reply to this post and we will be able to further analyze the situation.

  • Have the same Problem with Word 2002. Validation says not activated, word says is already activated. Deleting data.dat won´t solve the case. Validate in the past (about 6 month ago) generated no problem. Thanks for help.

  • I too have a similar problem. I recently bought and installed Office professional 2007. Word 2007 refuses to allow me to access web material because it says my version of Word 2002 (bought and updated regularly since 2004) is not activated. But, as I knew it would, Word 2002 tells me it "this product has been activated.' I have spent several days trying to get this product glitch fixed but no one at Microsoft even admits it is a problem.

I am also unable to update Word 2007 because the Genuine Validation tool also says my Word 2002 is illegal.

Also when I try to connect to Microsoft via Word 2007, and / or Word 2002, I keep getting the message "Error launching browser" or Browser not found. this occurs even when I have IE 7 running in the background. I can't even download templates from Microsoft, but it did let me download the birthday card template.

this is really getting to be a pain. can you help me. thanks ken. (kenzzz)

  • Kenzzz,

Please follow the guidance located:  http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2170295&SiteID=25 .  Next I need for you to create your OWN thread and not post here. This will ensure you received personalized attention as well as minimize confusion with too many posters within the same thread.
