Using Windows 7 from Parallels Desktop 7 on Boot Camp? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've seen a lot of questions from people going from Boot Camp to Parallels, but I am going from Parallels to Boot Camp and am just asking if I will need new product activation codes and all?

I haven't set up Boot Camp, or touched it at all. I only have Windows on Parallels, as a virtual machine. Will I need to spend $200 on another license?

Yes, you can remove the Parallels vm and reuse this license in a Boot Camp partition.  Full license retail copies are transferrable.

  • If you have a retail copy of Windows you can remove the Parallels virtual machine and then reuse the copy of Windows in a Boot Camp partition.  However you cannot use the same license in both Boot Camp and a Parallels vm at the same time.  Please follow the instructions in announcement 1 at the top of this forum page if you wish an evaluation of the license you are using in in the Parallels virtual machine now.

  • So, to clarify, I can remove the virtual machine (http://download.parallels.com/desktop/v5/docs/en/Parallels_Desktop_Users_Guide/30109.htm) and then I will be able to use my product activation key to create a Boot Camp partition?

(Sorry if I sound like I know nothing, but really I don't)

  • Only if you are using a retail license.  OEM licenses aren't valid in a Parallels vm or Boot Camp on a Mac.  To repeat what I said before, if you want an evaluation you need to comply with announcement 1 above and paste a copy of the MGADiag report in your reply here.
