obtaining updated version of previously purchased windows xp RRS feed

  • Question

  • HI,  In 2002 I had a computer built and it came with windows xp home full version.  I have decided to seriously update that old computer and had problems installing the old 2002 version of windows on the newer computer that I had put together. I was told that all the hardware was working fine and compatible that the problems was with windows version or the cd was possibly damaged.  Okay, so how do I go about getting a nice newer version of windows xp home using the original windows key.  In other words, I do not want to purchase a whole new version of windows with I already have purchased windows xp home.  I just have a bad disk or need the lastest version to install on the new hardware.
Can or will Microsoft send me a  disc with the very lastest version of windows xp home and let me use my previously purchased xp key?  If so, how do I go about it?  Thanks.
PS.  the computer store said they can install the lastest version using my key (at a cost of 75 bucks!!) but can't make me a disc (to use with my key) for me to have on hand for possible reinstalls or whatever.  Thanks to anyone for help
    Debbie
