Moving WHS to a new PC(moving hard drives to a different box) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed WHS on my main PC using 3 hard drives.(120GB on Primary IDE, 120GB & 20GB on PCI IDE controller)  I'm happy enough with WHS that I want to reclaim my PC and put it on a spare PC I have laying around.

Can I simply move the 3 hard drives to this spare PC, boot, update drivers, and keep rolling?  Do I need to move the controller card, or can I connect the non-boot drives to whichever open IDE connection I wish?

  • You have to normally have almost the same basic hardware.

You should try the "upgrade" install of WHS and see the FAQ about that. It's pretty well explained out there.

  • Hi

The only way this may work is if the motherboard chipset and cpu are in the same family.
IE:-  nforce to nforce chipsets and amd to amd cpu's. Make sense? At least this seems to work with Win XP.

Just my 2 cents, I haven't tried this with Win 2003 server line of software.
