MCITP Enterprise 2008 / MCSE 2008 Exam 70-647 exam retirement. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Using my MCSE 2003 I plan to take the 70-647 and 70-649 exams before they expire on July 31st , 2013.  And will take Windows 7 as the elective.

    Before August 1st

    70-647 + 70-649 + Elective = MCITP Enterprise Administrator 2008
    -or-
    70-647 + 70-640  + 70-642 + 70-643 + Elective = MCITP Enterprise Administrator 2008

After July 31st 70-649 and 70-647 are no longer available.  The three exams that the 649 substitutes for will still be available.

    70-647 (passed before the deadline) + 70-640 + 70-642 + 70-643 + Elective =  NOTHING ?

  • Hi Immutable_Sphere,

Yes. You are right. After July 31, 2013, exam 70-647 will mean zilch (to use your term).

Of course, the 70-647 pass will remain on your transcript if you already have it, but it will not count toward any new certifications going forward.

I hope I have answered your question. Good luck with you certifications.

  • Hi,

    I wrote a wiki about upgrading from MCSA/MCSE 2003: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16483.upgrade-from-mcsamcse-2003-to-mcsa-server-2012.aspx

  • That nicely plotted wiki shows the path for MCSA with exam 70-646 which will not expire on July 31st.

Not exactly what I was inquiring:

    MCSE 2003 +70-647 + 70-649 + Elective = MCITP: Enterprise Administrator (Before August 1st)

Does 70-647 taken before August first plus any of the components/substitutions taken after July 31st mean zilch ?

If someone has passed the 70-647 and then you pass any of the remaining pieces after July 31st

You will receive the following credential (which of these is the correct answer?)
    a) MCITP: Enterprise Administrator 2008
    b) MCSE: Windows Server 2008
    c) Credit for the MCSE: Windows Server 2012 track that will require additional exams 70-415, 70-416, and 70-417
    d) a&c
    e) b&c
    f) c but no title for Windows 2008 Server will be granted
    g) c but MCSA: Windows Server 2008 will be granted

I thought as the title/credential Enterprise Administrator greater than Server Administrator (like MCSE > MCSA).

Surprised I haven't seen this question elsewhere yet...

Wow.  That really blows.   Even more than the $35 reschedule fee I just had to pay (I haven't taken an MS exam since 2008 and was unaware of it).

I may have to take a test while on vacation just to get all five in under the July 31st deadline.  I thought there was time after July 31 for the non expiring elective.

Why bother with 2008 ?  Because HR / employers are idiots.  "You have 2012 server but not 2008 ? Sorry.  You must match all of the keyword requirements in our job ad."

Another question I probably know the answer already.  Will the free retake offer be extended or renewed before July 31st ?

  • Hi Immutable_Sphere,

Good to hear from you. It might be a challenge to complete all of your requirements before the July 31 deadline, but with the right effort and determination I'm sure you'll make it.

Regarding Microsoft's Second Shot offer (free exam retake), since Microsoft has said nothing about extending the deadline, then it is reasonable to assume that it will end on May 31 as currently scheduled. I'm sure they will run it again in the future, but it's unlikely to be before July 31.

Anyhow, I wish you every success with your studies, and I hope you're able to pass all you exams on time.

  • Looks like they changed the title deadline.

It didn't make any sense to me that they moved these exam deadlines to January 31, 2014 but were still dropping the Enterprise title on July 31, 2013.

From the MCITP section on Windows Server 2008.

The MCITP: Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008 and the MCITP: Virtualization Administrator on Windows Server 2008 R2 certifications will be retired on January 31, 2014. You must meet all of the requirements for a certification prior the certification retirement date in order to earn that certification.

So I just have to finish my MCSE 2003 by the end of July, then I have until January to finish up the exams I stated above.

This must have changed recently because the last confirmation I had was June 21st.
