CRM 3.0 Can't Save Appointment with "Regarding" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our laptop client users are experiencing an issue that seems to occur after they have been using CRM for a couple of weeks.  This issue only occurs with the laptop client.

    - Schedule a new appointment in Outlook.

    - Select the "Regarding" button and choose an account or contact.

    - Save the Appointment.

    The following error message appears:

The Microsoft CRM server could not be contacted or the user has insufficient permission to perform this action. This item has been saved in Microsoft Outlook but is not being tracked in Microsoft CRM

Since the same user can send an email to the same contact and link it via the Regarding button without an error, there is clearly no problem contacting the server.  Just to prove that this is not a permission issue, we gave the users system administrator priveleges.

Has anyone else experienced something like this???

  • I have experienced similar issues.  This behavior happens for our remote users who are connected via VPN.  In layman's terms, CRM was not able to find the record in the database to update the Regarding field.  Not sure if this is your issue, but the workaround for our remote users was to create the activity (meeting), save it, Set Regarding and then save and close.

  • We can find the record in the database to update the Regarding field - no problem.  We just can't save the Appointment and promote the record up to CRM.  We get the error on save.

    Wierd.

  • I understand, did you try to create the record in Outlook, save and close it without setting the regarding?  Try that and if that works, open the record in Outlook and try to set Regarding then save it.  Let me know if that set of steps work.

Does this only happen when your users are working remote or does it happen when they are working directly on the network (internal).

    Thank you,

  • Yes - we did try your workaround.  It doesn't work in our situation.  This happens whether the laptop client is connected via VPN or is hardwired to the network in the office.

We've escalated the issue internally with Microsoft support and are running diagnostics........

  • Turns out that it is a bug, and a hotfix was issued.

They will be posting a KB article.

EDIT:  the hotfix seemed to fix the issue for a few days, now it is back.  Still waiting for a permanent fix........

  • false alarm.  the hotfix did correct the issue, a similar problem occurred when we changed security roles.  Careful what you change in the security roles, it can have an effect on things like this.  for some reason, access is needed to modules that we are not even using to allow an appointment to be promoted to CRM.

  • Could you please post where I can find the hotfix.. I am having the same problem..

    Thank you,

  • Microsoft support has assigned a KB article - KB Number: 950119.  I'm not sure if its published yet, but if you contact support they should be able to give you the hotfix that was issued for this problem.

  • Just for kicks, try giving the person sys admin capability temporarily and see if it still happens.  Security roles are part of the mix..........

  • Turn Dev errors on by downloading the Diag Tool for CRM 3.0.  Recreate the error and check the log files to obtain more details about the error.

  • When you say that you have given the user all security rights, do you mean that you assigned them the System Admin role.  If not, assign the user the Sys Admin role, reboot the user's workstation and try again.  If you still receive an error, you will need to open a ticket with Microsoft Support.

  • I would open a support ticket with Microsoft so they can troubleshoot the issue.
