Set up Domain Name: Help RRS feed

  • Question

  • Long story short:

    1. Set up WHS, and remote access,  including my own domain name.
    2.  Everything worked fine.
    3. For a stupid reason, I had to re-install the server.
    4.  Re-installed, and now attempting to regain access to my original domain name
    5.  first step, to sign in to Windows live.
    6. I know I am using the right email and password,  but wont take me any further.  No error code,  nothing.  I hit next,  it works for about 1 sec, then same screen with the password highlighted.  No error message, nothing.  If I use incorrect password,  it say so.

What do I do to go to the next step??

    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Does your server have already Internet Connection and is fully patched?
Especially in self built systems sometimes no driver for the network adapter is installed - you would have to do that manually.

  • Thank you for your answer.

Yes,  server fully patched, and network adapter is installed and working.

  • Strange. Sometimes Live Custom Domain Services have been temporary down, but this seems not to be the case today. If you have another ID and try this, would this get you further? (You can still cancel, if necessary.)
What happens, if you login to the desktop of the server, open Internet Explorer and use the ID to sign in to live.com? Does that work?
Does your server have more than one network interface?
Can you see anything in the event viewer of the server, which may point to the reason?

    Thank you for you response,

I have tried another ID,  same result.  I have no problem loging into live.com.  The server has only one network interface, on the mainboard.  I will check the event viewer.

Olaf,  is there any other way to configure Domain name.  Remember, it was previously working before I had to re-install the WHS.   I appreciate any assistance you are able to provide.

    Thanks

  • A few things that could help:

    1. From the homeserver desktop start Internet explorer, then enter in https://dyndns.domains.live.com/service/livedyndns.asmx in the address bar. This should result in error page (Server Error in .......). If you can't reach the page (this webpage can not be displayed) your internet connection is not configured properly.

    2. Logs to check are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs\, named ddns-ddmmyy.log.

  • I got the same problem, did no reinstall but tried to change my domain name.
Tried it with an other account now it shows the message : Windows Home Server could not open the setup program for your chosen Domain Name Provider

Tried to reach Https page and this gave a nice error message, so it seems that the domain service is up.
The event logs shows no strange errors, the system is fully patched.

    Thanks,

    Jacko
