Windows 7 Pro - Dell OEM - activation fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Dell Studio 17 came pre-installed with Windows 7 Pro. After about 30 days it started to come up with the "Windows is not genuine" message, and I was advised by a friend to try a complete re-install of Windws 7 using the OEM disc Dell provided, as apparently Windows should activated automatically during installation using a key in the BIOS. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and when I try and activate it says "The Windows 7 Professional product key you typed is invalied for activation" and gives me these 3 options:

    1. Buy a new product key online

    2. Type a different product key

    3. Contact Microsoft to help solve the problem

Obviously I'm not going to buy another key. My laptop did not come with any COA (I've got on to Dell about that...) so I can't do 2. I'm trying 3 right now on this forum. Here is the report I get from the tool:

  • Your computer has no dell slic bios marker, contact dell support and tell them exactly that. Also, if you were sold a computer with windows 7 then it MUST have a COA sticker, if they did not provide it and you paid for a computer that came with windows 7 then they owe you that key. Some laptop manufacturers have started placing the COA key in the battery compartment to avoid theft of the key, check the battery compartment by removing the batter with the system powered off and unplugged. Look for the key there or in any other modular bay that looks like a safe place to place a key (do not disassemble anything, just check the easy and obvious places).

If there is no key, no disk, no bios marker then you need to grab your paperwork for your purchase and call Dell and discuss it with them.

  • Sometimes on Dell Laptops the COA is hidden by the battery.
