Bought Office Ultimate (student license), WGA says genuine but WGA button-nag is still present! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just bought Office 2007 Ultimate and installed on top of an existing Office 2007 (I expected that installers these days would guess that I wanted to replace it). Everything says Genuine now, except for the annoying button in Office itself. When I click "This Office is not Genuine" I'm presented a page saying that it's perfectly validated.

I was convinced that it was due to parts belonging to the "old" install, and it did indeed still show up in Add/Remove programs, so I uninstalled both and reinstalled. Still same problem.

Do you have a cure for stubborn applications?

  • Hello odyssey555,

Would you first go to http://microsoft.com/genuine/diag and click the Start Diagnostic button (this is different then the Diagnostic tool you used to generate the above Diagnostic Report).  The page will check to see if your system is setup properly to Validate as well as check for common issues. If it finds anything, it will either give you a button to fix the issue automaticly or if it can't, it will provide manual steps to resolve.

Once you pass the Diag page without any errors, click the Validate Office button. Tell me if Office Validates successfully.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • I went to the site and it found two problems and corrected them.

The nag is STILL present! Just to clarify, everything validates successfully - It's just that freaking nag that won't believe it!

  • Hello :-),

Curious did you purchase Office Ultimate Full or Retail version? If you purchased the Full version I would uninstall all versions of Office then conduct a clean installation with Office Ultimate. First make sure you back up any files you may have such as emails that were downloaded to your Outlook etc.

    Maybe this will help.

    Thank you,

    Stephen

  • Yeah, after I installed Office Ultimate (I bought) on top of the existing Office, I realised that both versions sort of co-existed.

I tried uninstalling both, and just install the new version, but the problem persisted!

Edit: Stephen: Why didn't you read my first post? The questions you asked is even in the title ;)

  • Thanks for the link, I will try it out later...

As a sidenote, I think it's REDICULOUS that users should have any problems with software they have legally bought, just because you fancy some advanced (and often malfunctioning) methods of validating the software!

  • Yes that indeed helped. It seemed that Office "forgot" to uninstall the WGA c-r-a-p (one of the msi-packages). Maybe you should go tell the devs to fix this!
