OneCare Firewall issue? RRS feed

  • Question

I have two XP Home, one XP Pro, and one HP all-in-One printer Scanner wirelessly attached to a Netgear wireless router.  I can't install the printer one the machines because the install software can't find the printer.  Also, I can't share folders between computers.  Message says I don't have permissions.  I can find the printer using the IP address and I have been able to manually open a port for printing but the scanner function is not available.  OneCare does see and monitor the status of the other computers.  All of the computers can ping the printer.  I suspect a firewall settings problem but I can't figure it out.

  • For the general sharing issues, see if the following helps:

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable them in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

For the scanner functionality, you may want to check the HP support documentation for special steps you may need to take to allow it through the firewall. It may be ports or it may be the application/driver.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.
