Will OEM Win 7 work if I swap motherboard? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an aging computer running an OEM install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I need to replace the mobo, CPU and RAM. I won't be able to replace the hard drive or the OS.   Will Microsoft let me do this?  Are there other considerations or alternative within the constraints mentioned above?

  • An OEM Windows 7 license cannot be transferred to a different motherboard.  It's activation is permanently tied to the very first motherboard it was activated on.  If the original motherboard died, then so did the Windows 7 license.
