After Win 10 102400 build install, IE is gone and Money Plus doesn't start RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had been pleased to find that Money 2003 and Money Plus ran well on Win 10.  That is until today when I installed the latest build.

Now, Money wants IE6, but Win10 will not install IE6.

I have tried IE11 which installs, but Money isn't accepting that.

    Suggestions ?

  • After much searching I have found this works for me

MS Money (MoneyDlxSunset) has worked with following registry change.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
    "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)

I'm not sure about side effect by this change. registry change is at own risk.

  • I am having the same issue - have had to move it into a Windows 7 VM as a temporary fix, but will be investigating something longer term.

Might try to reinstall the software and see if that resolves it.

  • Reinstall does not solve the problem. I am reporting this issue in Win 10 insider forums.

MS Money Plus Sunset is no longer working in build 10240. Need an immediate work around or patch. This is a show stopper."

  • Tried that - Didn't work.

This is serious for me. I'm so disappointed ... And with there being so many rumours that this is the "RTM" equivalent

  • I don't think we can take this error message seriously.  The problem probably has nothing to do with the unavailability of IE 6, which has not been usable on prior OSes at least as far back as XP.  So the message is most likely a mangled response the inability of Money to find any Internet Explorer even though IE 11 is installed and Money found it in the past.   Hopefully, this is a registry change in the new build that can be easily fixed.  Otherwise I'm sticking with Windows 7.

  • For those of you having problems importing statements there is a modified DLL you can download from  http://www.mediafire.com/download/zj0amk06ax57cfg/mnyob99.dll

Backup the original MNYOB99.DLL by renaming to orgMNYOB99.DLL

        C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles

Copy Download Patched MNYOB99.DLL to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\MNYOB99.DLL

  • This makes me nervous.  The registry change to make Money work, alters the registry entry to an IE version other than the current one.  Seems to work now, but what happens when the IE version (and probably the registry entry) changes again with a Windows 10/IE 11 update which will now occur often (much more than monthly according to MS).  If MS doesn't fix this we could be in real trouble with Win 10.
    Monday, July 20, 2015 1:39 AM
  • I expect we will need to apply this registry change everytime MS patches IE to a new version.

The hidden question is what else within Windows 10 uses this entry anyway, besides displaying it.

My worry is that some patches wont be applied because of a check on this entry as a pre-requisite.

    Thanks, Tim

  • Yes it is originally 9.11.10240.16384, i made a backup of the registry entry before i changed it to 9.11.10240.0

I was thinking about this and could not understand how it has worked in the past in 2005 ie11 wasn't even out so I resoned on startup money looks for the version file and just uses it so why has it failed now? I think its the place holder size I put in 9.11.10240.1 and this still works. Some one needs to mod money to accept more digits I think. Further tests 9.11.10240.1638 is accepted its the last digit that causes the problem!
    Tuesday, July 21, 2015 10:56 AM
  • Robin, that is a very interesting observation that you have made. I don't think that the last digit of the Revision Number segment of the 'Version' number is specifically the issue. I am still using Windows 8.1 and the value for the Version entry is '9.11.9600.17905' and Money doesn't complain. Here my Revision Number is 5 in length just like the offending number of '16384' in build 10240 but my Build Part number at '9600' is one shorter. So it would seem that it is the length of the Version number as a whole that is the issue.

If that is the case then the mod would appear on the face of it to be simple. The question is that as a discontinued product would MS even consider doing such.

At the moment I am looking at the registry hack as a very short-term solution when I go to Windows 10 and maybe us MS Money users should consider that we are really on borrowed time. Perhaps it is time to look for a replacement after all.

I downloaded the official W10 and Money won't start.  We should ask Microsoft to provide a fix.  It dos not make sense (to me) that users have to do registry edit or changes.

Until then, I am bacck to W8.1 and W7.

  • I've tried to make this change but 'Regedit' will not allow me to make amendment. How do I get it to work? Extremely frustrated with Microsoft at the moment, one would have thought they would have at least sorted out this incompatability issue with a patch before public release, even if they don't intend to update the software for a 64bit OS.

I really need Money up and running and it looks like you have a fix - thing is I don't know what to do to make the registry change - ie when and where do I go to change it (and is it as simple as just changing the numbers).

    Help please.

  • I am now running Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition Version 11.0 (Canadian) on Windows 10. Your registry edit has worked for me! I am thrilled! Thank you!
    Thursday, July 30, 2015 6:39 PM
  • See above. He has screen shots of how to go into regedit. It worked for me and I am running Money 2003 as well. I have been online banking and it is receiving downloaded statements/updates to my accounts. I didn't think it would work but a simple change to the registry as he prescribed worked!

Search 'regedit' then goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

    and change "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)

    His registry values are correct.

  • I just installed Win 10 this morning and had the same problems with Money (my version is Money 2004, V12).  I tried using the registry key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

but there were no fields to edit in this key.  However, I did find a key that held editable values at

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

All I did was delete the final number of 9.11.10240.16384, truncating it to 9.11.10240.1638 and everything works fine.

I also went into IE 11, found the About Internet Explorer in Settings, and unchecked the box for doing automatic updates. Hopefully this will keep Money running for the foreseeable future.

  • I don't get it. I made sure that all hidden files in Windows 10 are shown. I follow that path and there isn't any MNYCoreFiles folder. I did a search for the original mnyob99.dll and it shows it exactly where you say it should be but it's just not there and I double checked that all hidden files and folders are shown. I even reinstalled Microsoft Money and it works just fine until I download files from my bank. The only difference is that my Program Files are shown as X86.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

I think you are saying that your Moneycorefiles was in a different place, but you located and successfully replaced the mnyob99.dll with the patched version. So it sounds like you did the right thing. I am sorry to hear that did not fix the OFX import problem. Let's hope somebody can come up with a solution. Crashing when importing OFX files is a killer bug IMO. :-(

  • After much searching I have found this works for me

MS Money (MoneyDlxSunset) has worked with following registry change.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
    "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)

I'm not sure about side effect by this change. registry change is at own risk.

Excellent, worked for me on UK version 14.0.120.1105, I do not use MS-Money actively any longer, I took the decision to move to YNAB 2 years ago, it is superb, we worth a try, but I still  like having access to my money fie for archive purposes.

    thank you.

  • Agreed...."the side effect" is what is making me not do any registry changes...I rolled back and now all kinds of things like my Nvidia graphics manager won't start up...says its missing files. GREAT! Thanks Microsoft...worst thing is I liked 10 for the 12 hours I had it.

  • Works like a charm!

Further problem:  When I shut down W10, the system responds that msmoney is still running, even though I've shut down msmoney.  W10 will do a forced shutdown of msmsoney followed by a system shutdown - which I'd rather not.

  • Same for me. Everything else in Windows 10 is wonderful (was fearful after the mess of Windows 8), but Windows 7 users should have no problem EXCEPT THIS.  Use MS Money Deluxe 2003 daily without problem till now. I don't need internet connection for it...alll my settings excluded internet downloads, so why the devil is it looking for IE6 before it'll let me in.  If it persists without fix, I'll have to return to Win 7...no other home accounts software like Money. For now will keep one machine on Win7 and cross fingers for HELP.

  • Agree with you. Any fudge is likely to be undone with future updates as they clearly want to get rid of IE. I know they aren't supporting money, but they know very well how many home users have been happy to use it continuing just as it is. I for one (with UK Deluxe 2003 version), have never wanted a download connection to Money at all, and all my settings say this, but I'm still failing on IE6 not available. I will have no choice but to go back to Win 7 as I can't lose nearly 20 years of home accounts.

  •      Thank you for help I Figured out how to find my old MNYob99.dll was from 2010 and the one you referred to was 2013 so after downloading the patch I could move new .dll to old one and replace in my MNYCoreFiles , Thanks again Now MS Money is not crashing and I have imported bank data, whit no problems. I happy we have people like you that are out there to help w/ all my problems Have a good day.

  • The following five (5) steps worked perfectly for me to fix the problem.

1 - Download PATCHED MNYOB99.DLL file provide from

     http://www.mediafire.com/download/zj0amk06ax57cfg/mnyob99.dll

2- Enable Show Hidden Files in Folder Options

Click radio button to turn on Show hidden Files, folders, and drives

Turn off Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended)

    Image

3- Backup the original MNYOB99.DLL by renaming to MNYOB99.DLL.org

        C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles

    4 - Copy Download Patched MNYOB99.DLL to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\MNYOB99.DLL

    Image

5 - Run Regedt to edit the Windows 10 registry. Make the following registry change.

           [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]

           "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originally: 9.11.10240.16384)

    Image

Enjoy the Microsoft Money Deluxe Sunset Love! It now runs perfectly on Windows 10 RTM Build 10240. Additionally, it does not crash when sync electronically to  import & balance your downloaded financial statements.

    EDIT

If you are running win10 32bit the registry entry you need is

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]  (without Wow6432Node)

    Sunday, August 2, 2015 2:23 PM
  • Now using Money Plus Sunset deluxe after I foolishly allowed Windows 10 to "upgrade" Money 2007 to Sunset which then came up with the IE 6 error.  Registry does not contain a WOW node but does have the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer entry.

I also deleted the final number (4) of 9.11.10240.16384 and Money works fine.  Thanks for helping me to avoid another day spent trying to fix Money that I have had for years.  Thanks a bunch

  • I followed all the above steps meticulously but to no avail. I (and that was probably my mistake) uninstalled my MSM 2005 and reinstalled it. Nothing. Did the same thing also for MSM deluxe. Same error message on IE6. Re-installed MSM 2005 and all the patches again (did the same for MSM deluxe). Nothing. I still get the IE6 error message. Does anyone have the same issues or any word of advice. All the above comments have been very encouraging but unfortunately it does not seem to work for me. Any ideas will be very welcome.

    Sunday, August 2, 2015 6:26 PM
  • Thank you for this!  I had an older version of MS Money that wouldn't work after Win10 installation, but my brother went in and changed the registry as suggested and it works great now!!  I'm so happy.  Haven't noticed any side effects.

    Sunday, August 2, 2015 7:08 PM
  • I follow the instructions you have provided, but I don't have a "version" under Internet Explorer. All I have is a "Version Vector" with no place to make any changes you suggest.

  • I follow the instructions that have been provided, but I don't have a "version" under Internet Explorer. All I have is a "Version Vector" with no place to make the changes that were suggested. I don't even have a Microsoft Money folder that can be found, but I do have my backup files on the hard drive. When I do click on the backup or a sample file, the program launches but I get the error message that "Money requires Internet Explorer 6 to function properly."

I am using USMoneyDlxSunset. Today the official version of Windows 10 downloaded on my computer and the problems began. This sucks!!! Anyone else have an identical problem?

  • Please help - I run a small business, using MM for basic accounting and the loss of access is a major problem. Hotkey Access to Internet Explorer has now disappeared and Wow6432Node has no version numbers - have Microsoft updated this ?
    Monday, August 3, 2015 8:33 AM
  • I think your only option for the present is not to go to Windows 10 yet. Do try the registry tricks listed above before abandoning hope, though. You will of course have kept backup files (I hope).

  • As mentioned, the registries were there when I first upgraded to 10, but shortly afterwards the registry for IE disappeared and the registry for Wow6432Node has no version numbers - how can MM have worked on earlier builds of 10, but not now ?

    Monday, August 3, 2015 8:53 AM
  • Great fix. It's working for me now - well done in finding it. Why hasn't Microsoft approved and issued official response?

Scroll back up and look very carefully at the instructions provided by im-mad. Particularly where you change the version number for IE.

  • Hallelujjjjaaaahhh. Thank you jimmVZ You are absolutely right. One needs to read very carefully. In case there are more morrons like me. One needs to be very careful to change the registry entry in the right subfolder. There are two different ones mentioned in this trail. I initially just changed it in the Microsoft folder, but you have to do it in the very last folder. The Wow...... folder. This will do the trick - at least it finally did if for me. Well, should have read more carefully and it would have saved me hours. I hope my carelessness might at least help some of you who may have fallen into the same trap.

  • Ok Now thanks all for the effort my Money now works and opens the only issue I've now got is when I want to enter a new payee it crashes.

However, the way I'm currently getting around it is enter one that is already on the list then go back and edit it change the values and the information and enter all good.\

So the only issue currently with mine is entering an new payee and the category.

Sample is Date OK, them who I payed OK, then soon as I go to category stops working.

Thanks all good help just need to fix that glitch.

    Dennis.

  • I tried this and got Money to open but then get an error that says the program stopped working. It wont let me do anything but close the program. Any suggestions?
    Wednesday, August 5, 2015 9:29 AM
  • I did the regedit and it worked for a few days, but as of 8/5/2015 It stopped working. The error box states MS Money has stopped working and windows will look for a solution, and that the program will close. I know there was another update this morning so I suspect this mucked up the hack.
    Wednesday, August 5, 2015 2:37 PM
  • Thx for the info!!!
    Wednesday, August 5, 2015 2:40 PM
  • Re. the registry hack, i already wrap my use of Money in a script to make it more network friendly, so will probably hack up that script to do/undo the registry fix. I have no clue if anything else uses data traceable to that registry key and suspect it's rare at best. But I can eliminate the problem and also detect other changes to its value over time.

I have not used Mony much under Win10 yet, but find many of these reports of vanilla MSM Money corruption type problems under Win10 after the registry hack noteworthy. Are they just the usual Money issues or is something more going on?

We can infer one interesting thing: Since not very many PC users, in the population of Windows users, are yet running Win10, and since so many people have come here with this issue, there are still probably a considerable number of people out there using MS Money. (100:1? 1,000:1? 10,000:1? I dunno.) What is harder, perhaps, to understand, is why so many of them create new threads right next to existing ones on the exact same subject. Read more, post less.

  • I just upgraded to Windows 10. and was very disappointed that Money Plus doesn't work after install and then crashing. it was two steps to make it works:

Step1. Edit registry to make Money Plus works on Windows 10.

    I found it here https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ce248a5f-6370-4fa0-8db5-aadde33fec14/after-win-10-102400-build-install-ie-is-gone-and-money-plus-doesnt-start?forum=money

Step 2. Download mnyob99.dll, extract, copy and paste into Money Plus program folder(replace original).

     I found it here http://www.mediafire.com/download/m1dq0ncxhdqrtlj/MoneyPlusSunsetBiz.zip

    Wednesday, August 5, 2015 9:50 PM
  • Sadly the changing of mnyob99.dll will not work on UK versions of Microsoft Money 2005.

Is it possible for somebody to upload a modifed mnyob99.dll that will work on the UK edition.  If need be I can the UK verison of the file to someone who could help me if neccessary.

    Thursday, August 6, 2015 4:31 AM
  • hack up that script to do/undo the registry fix

I should have thought about that a few more seconds. The folly of that thinking should have been obvious: security makes this a much larger hurdle than I was thinking. So I'll live with the hacked value, I used .9999, until i stumble on a reason not to.

  • I have just spoken with Microsoft and they advised me that because Windows 10 uses Microsoft Edge as its browser, IE is no longer supported so Money will not work with W10.

I have gone back to W8.1 and everything works again.

  • Bloody brilliant.  Works perfectly on Money UK!
    Thursday, August 6, 2015 12:36 PM
  • Finally got the registry fix figured out.  I had to leave out the Wow6432Node and go directly to Microsoft/Internet Explorer.  Don't understand why but it worked and I am back in business with my Money program that I have been using for 17 years.  Thanks so much for posting the solution.  We are a happy bunch right now.  Now I can move on and enjoy Windows 10.

It turns out that the Wow6432Node  is only used in the 64-bit versions of Windows 10, so I presume you are using the 32-bit version of Windows 10. https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/66dd0454-699c-4ff4-8ccb-5a890e1dc089/a-way-to-make-the-windows-10-registry-internet-explorer-error-message-workaround-posted-by-immad-in?forum=money has both strings described, and it also has links to .reg files to more automate the changing of the registry keys.

That statement regarding Internet Explorer is not true.

Windows 10 ships with both Edge (the default browser) and IE 11. Currently IE 11 is supported through the normal product lifecycle.

It is MONEY that is no longer supported, so there is no requirement on Microsoft to ensure it works with Windows 10 or IE11.

  • After much searching I have found this works for me

MS Money (MoneyDlxSunset) has worked with following registry change.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
    "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)

I'm not sure about side effect by this change. registry change is at own risk.

I have the latest build of Windows 10 on a 64 bit machine. Now modifying the registry does allow MS money sunset build to load it will not accept my password into my account so I can load my actual money file.
    Thursday, August 6, 2015 7:33 PM
  • Could someone with Windows 10 (latest build) check what is the actual version number of Internet Explorer 11.  Is it 9.11.10240.16384 or 9.11.10240.0 (or something else)?

The latest build is 9.11.10240.16384 .. If you change that to this 9.11.10240.0 MS Money sunset build will load now if you don't use a password to get in to your files then this change should work for you.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the very helpful tips and tricks - as with most of the users here I've been using Money for a long time, Money 98 in my case. However, I have a pervading feeling of unease regarding the likelihood of keeping Money going in the long term. I hope this wont be taken as defeatist but is there any other package that comes in any way close to Money??

    Thursday, August 6, 2015 8:36 PM

  • Currently IE 11 is supported through the normal product lifecycle.

It is MONEY that is no longer supported, so there is no requirement on Microsoft to ensure it works with Windows 10 or IE11.

Money no longer being supported means they have no obligation to fix Money. (Not that they ever did fix Money, but that's another thread.) But it doesn't mean they don't have the more general obligation of an operating system change: to "do no harm" to the installed base of legacy applications, be they your own abandonware or somebody else's. It is for this reason that even when support for IE as a browser ends, they probably won't immediately remove MSHTML.DLL, or even IE, from the OS. Money is far from the only thing that uses MSHTML. And lots of corporate legacy crap still requires IE. Look at how much corporate IT angst there was over getting rid of IE6 not all that long ago.

Still, in the long haul, we either need to be thinking about Money VMs or alternate solutions to get off Money. I know that sucks because there aren't any, but the time will come. Think of this as a ghost of some Christmas future for Money.

  • Thank you for the patch to MNYOB99.dll. I had done the registry changes on the 29th after 10 was finish & I went to work on my checking account. That worked. But I too was not understanding why that was  necessary since I have been using IE11. But today when I wanted to balance the account & import my statement ~~~, then it would not even run because the import was pending...So I purchased Quicken 2015 after spending too long on trying to get Sunset back, repair, uninstall-reinstall,. Thanks Mediafire!

  • Hi Dick Watson. Long time since I've been here but thought I'd give everyone my situation. I'm still with Money Plus Deluxe 17.0 Sunset and am coming up on 20 years of data on September 1st. (Start 9/1/1995)

I stupidly accepted the free Windows 10 upload this past Wednesday and got the IE6 message. After then checking this site I decided to revert back to Windows 8.1. Both the upload to 10 and the revert back to 8.1 worked well for me. Of course, I will NOT allow myself to be without my Money financial program that I use on a daily basis. So after a few hours of a lot of CONCERN, I'm now back to where I was. I now know that Windows 10 is probably a good update to Windows 8.1. I'm now comfortable in WAITING a few months till things settle down and a PERMENENT fix for Money is set and then I can go and do the upgrade without the current concerns. If the worse happens, I'll live with Windows 8.1. I'll be watching here as hopefully things work out for all us legacy Microsoft Money financial program users around the world. Steve

  • The following five (5) steps worked perfectly for me to fix the problem.

1 - Download PATCHED MNYOB99.DLL file provide from

     http://www.mediafire.com/download/zj0amk06ax57cfg/mnyob99.dll

2- Enable Show Hidden Files in Folder Options

Click radio button to turn on Show hidden Files, folders, and drives

Turn off Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended)

    Image

3- Backup the original MNYOB99.DLL by renaming to MNYOB99.DLL.org

        C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles

    4 - Copy Download Patched MNYOB99.DLL to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\MNYOB99.DLL

    Image

5 - Run Regedt to edit the Windows 10 registry. Make the following registry change.

           [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]

           "Version"="9.11.10240.0"  (originally: 9.11.10240.16384)

I have checked this problem again. Microsoft has patched IE string from

9.11.10240.16384 to 11.0.10240.16431 in the svc string. In consequence I have edited the previously "hotfixed" string Version to 11.0.10240.16431 aswell. Money 17 works like a charm now. Please revert your registry hack, to avoid incompatibilities of future patches etc. and report back if this works for you, too.

  • I had the nightmare of Sunset first not being able to open, then I changed the registry (someone has that listed in this blog if you've done that then read on) and it worked until I tried to download my bank statement, then everything I did caused it to stop responding. I lucked up and found a Microsoft CD of Microsoft Money 2004 Standard. So first I removed my password from my Sunset (nightmare if you don't write down the backup TIME AND DATE, to choose from later), backed it up and then removed the program. My computer kept everything.

I redownloaded the Microsoft Money 2004 Standard, created a quick file (I went through the whole tutorial because I needed this to work). Once done, I Restored the backup (this is why I wrote down the time and date cause I'd removed the password from this backup because for some reason, it did not recognized my password on my other backups, I spent 30 minutes fighting this and it wasn't worth it).

I be darned..IT WORKED!! It opened up my last work backed up file and ALL THE INFO and here is the best news, I WAS ABLE TO DOWNLOAD MY BANK STATEMENT, open it, use it, update it, run a reconciliation and NO Microsoft Money has stopped working error box, yeah!!

I miss Sunset, but I will live without it until maybe Microsoft offers a patch or fix for Sunset to work in Windows 10. I hope this helps everybody cause I hate Quicken, too expensive and not user friendly and have not tried any other product cause Money does what I need and I don't care there is no help available but us to help each other.

  • The DLL problem has been around for years, since the days of XP.

We still have to mess around with mnyob99.dll.

As far as MSMoney is concerned, the lights are out and nobody is home!

  • When I tried this on my new computer that had Win 8.1 to Win 10,  I got the same view, but was unable to change the version numbers even though I'm listed as Administrator on my machine.  I had previously tried it on my old machine I was getting rid of converting from Win 7 to Win 10 so I could be sure this worked and I could test the process and had no problems, but didn't have the red "ab" banners next the to the list under version options.  How to I get access to change them?

  • Thanks a million, im_mad. I used your simplified instructions for the .dll fix and now it works as it should. Bank import no problem! Thanks again.

  • Plus and Sunset are working as of today March 13 2016. I opened it by mistake and I didn't get the error then the automatic closing of the program. I was able to pull a download from my bank into it, for a years time, no error, stayed open. Then I was able to reactive a backup from my old money program, like the first one ever they made was  still usable since the switch to 10. Works like it should now, very happy.
