After Remote Connection to Vista Ultimate Client using WHS remote access Windows Taskbar GONE RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a strange phenomen.  I am using WHS to gain remote access to a Vista Ultimate 32bit client.  All goes well in the Terminal Server session from the remote location.  When I return home and log into the Vista Ultimate client, the Windows Taskbar is gone.  It is NOT hidden at the bottom or Auto Hide or on one of the sides, etc...  It is gone and I can't bring it back.  I tried the Windows logo key on the keyboard but no menu poped up.

    Any suggestions???

You can try ctrl+alt+del and from within task manager on the client

    File>new task>explorer.exe

(you can quit task manager at this point)

This should restart your desktop. IF this is the problem.

Are there any icons on the desktop?  Are you using a different screen resolution between remote and home?

  • It opened windows explorer but did not bring back or make my Windows Taskbar work. 'The entire taskbar is gone, no clock, no Start button, no system tray...

  • I use 1280 x 720 resolution at home and work.  The desktop icons are there as well as Vista Sidebar.  All seems to work if I can get to it from a desktop icon but there is no Windows Taskbar along the bottom.

  •  More details about the Terminal Server session:

In the remote session it does not display my background image and it has a hard time updating the appearance of the Vista sidebar as I have a CPU meter and display the second hand on the clock application.  This makes the Vista Sidebar graphically busy.

The taskbar is there in the remote session 'butwhen I get home and log in it does not appear, even after a restart.

Other profiles still function fine locally but if I use them to login for a remote session then the taskbar no longer works in that profile.

Any profile used via remote access suffers and any profile that has never been accessed or logged into remotely, still functions fine and has its Windows Taskbar at the bottom.

Just to make sure, when you connect remotely, are you selecting Full Screen for Select a screen size for this connection (since 1280 x 720 is not a selectable resolution for Remote Access)?  If not, perhaps since you're not using the same screen resolution between your home display and the remote connection, your video card is having issues with it.

Do you ever get the Taskbar to return?  If so, what do you do to get it to come back?

  • Hi Stephen,
if you close the Terminal session, how are you doing this? Simply closing or by clicking the Windows button and selecting Logoff?
Are there any related errors, warnings or informations in the event log?

That a background image is not shown in the remote session, is normal behavior, since this really slows down Remote Desktop on slow connections.
You wrote, that you use a certain resolution at work, but which do you use locally?

  • I have not been able to get the taskbar back.

I use full screen for my session.

As for the exiting of the session, I use the logoff option.

I am connecting to the Vista Ultimate client remotely with Win XP Pro SP3 if that makes a difference.

I am unfamiliar with the "Event Log" or where to find it.  Would I be looking for this log on the Vista Client or the XP Pro system used for remote access.

Since the remote session avoids the background image, why does it not disable the windows sidebar?  The sidebar seems more graphically intensive than a stationary image.

Video performance was mentioned by another.  Both the client and the remote access computer are Q6600 Quad core intel based units with 4GB ram (yes I know only 3.5GB is seen by 32bit OS) with Nvidia 8 and 9 series graphics cards respectively.

  • You find the event logs of the client in Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer.
Especially the system log and the application log are of interest. Are there any Explorer or other crashes reported around the time you close the Remote Connection?
