  • Question

  • Hello,

I was having problems a couple days ago and thought I had them resolved but today vista wanted to activate again and then it told me I was not valid.  I have followed all the directions from the earlier post linked below.  I started a new thread since that on is marked as answered.  Right now windows update seems to be working but I have the message in the lower right hand corner that 'This copy of windows is not valid' and it is back to activating half the time when I boot up.  Thanks for your help.

    Pete

  • Darin,

This is getting interesting.  I did as you asked but when I rebooted the second time it did not ask me to activate by phone, it simply went to my desktop, I looked in control panel -> system and it said windows was activated, looking good.  So I shut down then turned my wireless card back to on and booted up.  Again it automatically activated as soon as I logged in, weird, then told me I was a victim of counterfeiting.  But I felt like experimenting so I ran the steps one more time with the wireless card shut off but booted into windows 4 times then shut down turned the wireless back on and booted into windows normally.  It did not activate again and I have now rebooted 3 more times with no error messages.  While I am not confident that the problem is fixed this is the longest its worked correctly in a few days.  Oh I also ran http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ and it came up as fine, no problems.  But then I expected that since running that has never said I have a problem since we started working on it, always came up clean.  So if this is it thanks for all your help, if it happens again should I go ahead and do a service request?  One good thing out of this, I finally learned how to paste into a DOS window, I knew there must be a way.  Thanks again,

    Pete

  • Hi again petedamick,

In the old thread, I suggested some steps, but you had already tried a different set of steps, that you had found in other posts.  Have you since tried the steps that I originaly suggested?

    ---------------------------------

The first thing to try is to simply re-enter your Product Key into Vista.  To do this:

    1) Click 'the Start' button
    2) Right-click 'Computer'
    3) Select 'Properties'
    4) Click 'Change Product Key'
    5) Enter the same Product key as is already being used in Vista (i.e. the key from the Vista Retail box)

Hopfuly this will reset the Licensing store.

    ---------------------------------

If the above didn't work, try the below steps.

(If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button
    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field
    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe
    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot 2 times

(If you Do Not access to the start button)

    1) Click the option Access computer with reduced functionality
    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot 2 times

  • Hi,

Yes I tried both those sets of steps.  After the second set of steps, which seemed to run fine, I rebooted and there was the message on the desktop that this copy of windows was invalid I then rebooted again, as the instructions state to do, and after logging in but before getting to the desktop was given the message that activation was successful (again).  When I got to the desktop I got the, now familiar, popup advising me that I may be a victim of counterfeiting.  I've noticed that when I have the message printed on top of the wallpaper in the lower right hand corner if I run MGADiag I get the message that my software is genuine.  When I reboot and windows activates again then run MGADiag the validation status says invalid license.

  •   Pete, I can't be sure this will fix anything, but I would like to know what happens if you try the second set of steps again, but this time have the computer disconnected from the internet.  That way it can't automaticly activate, on it's own.   It should prompt you to Activate by Phone.  If it does, go ahead...for some reason, I've seen Activating by Phone fix problems where activating over the internet, didn't.

After that, go directly to http://microsoft.com/genuine/diag and click Run Diagnostic. (the page detects if you have the proper setting to go thru Validation process correctly) I don't expect the page to detect any problems, but if it does, it will either fix it automaticly or tell you how to. Once done with the Diagnostic, click the Validate Windows button. Once done, reboot twice.

Lastly, if that doesn't stop this annoying issue (your Vista is Genuine, but a part of Vista just isn't getting the hint) go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029 and create a (no cost) service request. Once you are done, you should receive a Confirmation Number.  Post that number in this thread and i will contact and provide you with additional test and troubleshooting steps.

(Be sure that when you create the service request, that you enter an email address that you do not mind us contacting you thru)

    Thank you,
    Darin

  • hehe, the funny thing is I was around during the dos days and I (just recently) figured out how to paste into a dos prompt (boggles the mind how simple it is).

This is just a very odd issue. I can't pin down exactly why it was occuring and (from your description) I really can't pin down exactly why it resolved.  Anyways, fingers crossed on it saying fixed.

If it comes back, go ahead and create the Service Request, create a new thread and post the Confirmation Number (be sure to refreash my memory on the history of the issue) and we'll go from there.

    Thank you,
    Darin
