How to remote access Whs from another computer in the same network? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to remote access my whs from within the network through another computer, I have a account on the whs which is activated for remote access but when I try to access whs it says you must be granted the allow to log through terminal services right, whats that and how do i give my account those rights? :S I've looked through every settingspage in the whs console but its a no go :(

  • Using Remote Desktop (not the same thing as the Remote Access web site) is an unsupported way to access your server. By default, the only account that can access the server in that way is the Administrator account (the password is the one you use for the Console). But you should be very cautious when you access your server in this manner; there are tools available (some familiar from other operating systems) which can severely damage the functionality of the server software.

  • I was thinking i could go into server through remote desktop, then start my 2 exe files and then they will run in the server as long as it remains unrebooted?

  • If you'll tell us what you're trying to do, we may be able to help you figure out how to do it. But running a program in a Remote Desktop session and then disconnecting to leave it running isn't a good idea, for security (and other) reasons.

You should try setting it up as a service.  You can download the Server 2003 Resource Kit which includes a tool will set up any exe as a service.

  • I can't install the resource kit to the whs :/ I try to put it where its supposed to be (addins in the software map on the whs) and then see if the addin becomes available in the addin list through the whs console but it aint :(

I guess this is because the installation pack file is a .exe file, not a .msi file.. but I got no clue how to solve the problem >.<

    Sorry, I should have explained.

You need to logon to the server desktop to install the Resource Kit.  NOTE:  Proceed with caution accessing the server desktop as there are some parts of Server 2003 (the underlying OS) that, if used, will break your WHS installation.

  • then I still come back to my other problem, I cant reach the server desktop by remote desktop :( It just keeps saying you must be granted the allow to log through terminal services right and I've actived full access for my account >.< A bit clueless in how I am to proceed from here! I tried to fix the WHS-->router so I could reach it from remote access through internet instead but then my router apparantly didnt support uPnP according to the WHS setup, even though I've actived uPnP In the router :/

summary - I need to access my whs with remote desktop to install resource kit...  I've tried to log in with remote desktop on the server with every account that has remote access rights but it still keeps saying they dont have it .. -_-

I also tried the account Admin // myWHSpassword but that didnt work either, and as far as i remember I did not create any username for a adminaccount when I installed the WHS, GAHHHH this is driving me nuts!!!

That's because Remote Access rights is for the Remote Access website.  It has nothing to do with Remote Desktop.  You must logon to the server desktop as Administrator (using the server password as the password).

Did you use Admin for the username, or Administrator?  It must be Administrator.  Also, are you using the English version of WHS or another language?  If you're using say, French, I believe it's Administrateur.
