Virtual machine for 10175A RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone know where I can get the VM for the Microsoft 10175A SharePoint 2010 Developer course? I took the course a couple of years ago and wanted to review the exercises, but don't have the CD with the VM, only the course files. Unfortunately, many of the exercises don't work due to missing content, which I assume was included in the VM.

  • The VM required a Windows server operating system running Hyper-V. The files required to create the image are in the range of several GB in size (21 files x 244 MB each for MCTs). The setup is a real bear. As well, the Hyper-V images run extremely slow. Legally, no one (not even MCTs) can give you a copy of the giant VM for this class.

Have you considered setting up your own development environment? You could also use the free SharePoint 2010/2013 Foundation or an evaluation edition of SharePoint Enterprise 2010/2013.

Here is the download link for the SharePoint 2010 trial:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16631

Microsoft virtual labs can be helpful as well, although I didn't see any here specifically for SharePoint 2010:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/virtuallabs/default

Here are a bunch of SharePoint 2010 training videos. If you scroll down, you will find downloadable videos and labs - some virtual, some downloadable:

I hope this is helpful. Good luck!

  • Davin,

Thanks very much for the detailed info.

Yes, I am running a dev environment at home, but am having problems with the course exercises. When I try to deploy lab 04, there appears to be one or more missing lists (CurrentVacancies, for one). I thought that perhaps some of these lists might be on the VM, because they are not in the AllFiles.exe, nor are they built in the exercises. When I attended the course, I don't remember running into this problem.

It seems strange to me that Microsoft doesn't have a dedicated support site for classes, with errata and downloads for registered attendees. These forums help, but only because of dedicated folks like you!

  • Sorry you had trouble with this, Steve.

You may have luck contacting the author(s) of the course listed in front of the book. Hoppefully, there are email addresses. Alternately, you may be able to Bing one of the authors to learn their email address. Maybe they can help you set up you own installation. Maybe at lest tell you what SP lists you need to create.

    Good luck!

  • Davin,

I found the VM setup instructions on the web, but not the actual RAR files, so at least I can see what is being built. I'm sure that I will get there in the end, but it has been extremely frustrating so far.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Yeah - the 21 files are 244MB each and are only available to MCTs and the schools. I can't give you the files because I would possibly lose my MCT title forever.
